Dairy can be a frequent trigger. Gentle manual removal of the tonsil stones can be performed, using your finger, toothbrush, etc. Surgical treatment is to remove tonsils. Hello! Wax can generally be removed in the office setting. In very rare cases, it can be removed in the operating room, if needed. Your body will continue to make wax, however. Ear seems clogged. What's the best way to clean it?
Hi! There are multiple ways to clean clogged ears, if the clogged sensation is due to wax build up. As long as you're not having any significant pain, you can try over the counter ear wax cleaning solutions. There are multiple devices that you can search for at online retailers such as Amazon for cleaning ear wax. You are correct, Q-tips are not generally recommended as it will push the wax deeper into the ear canal where it is no supposed to be. If these methods are unsuccessfull, you could visit your primary care provider to have your ear canals examined. How long does swimmer's ear last?
Hi! Depending on the severity of the swimmer's ear infection, I generally treat anywhere from 7-14 days. If the infection is severe enough to where the ear canal is mostly occluded and won't allow ear drops to get in deeper, I place a small ear wick into the ear canal in the office to allow the drop to propagate in. It's difficult to say why you have this sensation without looking at your overall picture and obtaining your full history and physical examination. What is the hearing test for tinnitus like?
Hi! A full/formal hearing test is called an "audiogram". You will meet with an Audiologist who will guide you through the test. It generally involves listing for various tones through a headset in a sound-proof booth, as well as repeating back various words to grade your perception of normal speech. Other tests may also be performed at the time, to include the small probe (like an earplug) that fits in your ear canal to test the motion and function of the eardrum. An adult hearing test on average can take about 30 minutes. Treatment depends on whether your tinnitus is associated with hearing loss. You may be referred to an ear, nose and throat physician, if needed, to discuss treatment options. READ MORE
Is partial deafness possible after an ear infection?
Ear infections most commonly occur when fluid accumulates in the middle ear (the area behind the eardrum). When the infection has resolved, either naturally or after a course of antibiotics, the fluid in the middle ear can persist, leaving you with decreased hearing. In the majority of people, the fluid will clear on its own after a few months. "Dizziness" can be caused by many factors. Some dizziness can be as a result of true vertigo, which is generally described as a sensation of the room spinning around you. Some people also have associated nausea (feeling of throwing up) or actual vomiting/throwing up during their episodes or flare-ups. Lightheadedness or feeling like you're going to faint or blackout are not usually due to vertigo, but some other process such as blood pressure, heart related or other. True vertigo can be due to either a "central" process, meaning the brain or the central nervous system or a "peripheral" process, meaning something outside the brain, most commonly the balance organ in the inner ear. Hi, Hearing loss after trauma can be treated in multiple ways. The best initial workup is to obtain a formal hearing evaluation, performed by an audiologist, usually on the same day that you see your Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) physician. If hearing loss is present, your ENT will discuss the type of hearing loss you have and the best treatment plan. As a quick overview, hearing loss is either sensorineural (the inner ear, the nerve or the brain are at fault), conductive (the outer ear, ear canal, eardrum or the bones of hearing at fault), or both. Your hearing test should be able to determine the type of hearing you have, which then guides the treatment. Sensorineural hearing loss, for the most part, is usually permanent. Conductive hearing loss, especially after trauma, may improve after surgery, if necessary. Your ENT will discuss your treatment options. READ MORE
I keep getting blockages in my nostrils. Would I need surgery?
Hi, Nasal congestion or blockages are certainly a nuisance and can affect a person's quality of life. It's very important to find out what exactly is causing the symptoms. Most commonly, the problem areas are either at the nasal septum or the nasal turbinates. Deviated nasal septum and enlargement of the nasal turbinates are common causes of nasal congestion. Initial treatment is usually aimed at treating the nasal tissues and decrease their swelling. Use of various nasal sprays, allergy medication, and saline sprays/irrigations can help with nasal congestion/blockage. If symptoms do not improve, there may be other reasons for the blockage, such a severely deviated septal cartilage or bone spurs, nasal polyps or masses in the nasal cavity or in the back of the nose called the nasopharynx which only surgery may address. It's important to see an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) physician who can examine your nasal passages and recommend the proper treatment plan. READ MORE
Are there any complications in endoscopic sinus surgery?
Hello! Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) can be very beneficial when performed for the right reasons. It is generally a safe procedure, but like with any surgery, there may be complications. Complications that your ENT surgeon should discuss with you include: 1) Anesthesia complications - There is always a small risk with general anesthesia. This risk is increased if there is any family history of trouble with anesthesia. The risks can range from nausea and vomiting to very rare life-threatening problems. You can discuss any questions with your anesthesiologist. 2. Bleeding 3. Infection 4. Scarring of the inside of the nose 5. Chronic nasal drainage or excessive dryness or crusting of the nose 6. Hi! Having a neck mass can certainly cause some anxiety, especially as you're waiting for the results of your biopsy. The diagnosis of a neck mass is rather broad. Depending on your age, certain diagnoses are more common than others. Generally, the younger the patient, the more likely chance that the mass is due to inflammation. In older adults, a neoplasm (either malignant/cancerous or benign/noncancerous) is more likely. However, other possible causes could be infectious, inflammatory, autoimmune and congenital (something you were born with, but may present as the person gets older). READ MORE
