If you have an implant placed without any additional procedures (like bone grafting, etc.) the recovery is almost immediate - most of my patients report that they returned to normal everyday activities the same day. How long should Invisalign be worn?
This isn't a question that can be answered without seeing what you started with in relation to the arrangement of your teeth and bite relationship. How long did your dentist tell you it was going to take? Some cases move very quickly because they are easy cases (not severely crowded) and the patient was very compliant with aligner wear (wore them 22 hours a day), but more difficult cases (more serious crowding and bite maladies) could take over a year to accomplish even if the patient was very complaint with aligner wear. You have some control over the outcome by making sure you ALWAYS wear your aligners (except when eating), but if you want a faster outcome, ask your dentist about using an accelerator like a Propel vPro device every day - it can reduce the time by almost half when utilized. Can I use whitening toothpaste with braces?
You can use whitening TP with braces even though it won't have access to the areas under your brackets - the impact from whitening TP is not dramatic so it's unlikely that it will be noticeable when your brackets come off. We warn patients not to use the more dramatic whitening materials that would be visible later, but the TP isn't that effective to make a difference. READ MORE
Should you brush teeth before or after coffee?
Definitely brush your teeth before coffee to get the bacterial plaque off your teeth - that’s what will stain with the dark coffee. The same thing applies to brushing before foods that can cause decay - the plaque you remove is what causes the acids to form whenever refined carbohydrates are introduced into your mouth - hence, less decay when you brush BEFORE. Can composite bonding fill gaps?
Yes, the short answer is that it can fill in gaps like yours in your front teeth. The long answer is that it must be done by a dentist who is highly skilled in composite bonding techniques because that it what makes all the difference between a beautiful outcome and a so-so one. Make sure you have a good sense about the skills of the dentist before you do this (actually, you should be in continuing care anyway, so you should have a feel for your dentist's capabilities - don't just pick one out of the blue). How can I fix a cracked tooth?
You can’t fix it, but a good dentist can if it needs protection - if the health of the nerve chamber is good (not inflamed or infected, which would require root canal therapy before going any further), then it could be treated with covering the tooth with either a crown or an onlay to stabilize (and render the crack immobile). Since you are aware you have a cracked tooth, your dentist has (hopefully) evaluated if the tooth does need protection (some front teeth have visible cracks that don’t always need treatment). If you ask most dentists, the best time to get a denture is never - if you still have remaining teeth that oppose each other, keep them if at all possible. There are too many better options available to resort to dentures, except cost (dentures are probably the least costly, and unfortunately, the least desirable from a functional standpoint. You should be flossing thoroughly once every 24 hours whether you have periodontitis or not - it takes 24 hours for the biofilm to reform and start causing more damage. If you have periodontitis, you should also be getting your teeth regularly scaled (cleaned) by a good hygienist as well, since you can't remove the biofilm with floss after about 3 months - it starts to calcify, hence the need for the professional help every 3 months. Is it normal for the tooth next to an implant to hurt?
You didn't say when your implant was placed, but you should let your dentist know what you're experiencing - it can be something relatively innocuous (like a bite adjustment) or something more serious (like an infection if that tooth). How long after extraction can I get a bridge?
It depends on several things. First of all, where is the tooth? If it’s in the front of your mouth you’re going to need something temporary to be able to walk around and smile and not be self-conscious about the missing tooth. Second of all, it depends on whether you want to have as much healing of the bone occur before you have a final bridge placed (assuming you’re talking about a permanent fixed bridge not a removable) and that can take 6 months to a year for bone remodeling to occur. Even a removable partial denture can need to be re-lined if enough time doesn’t elapsed before your impressions are taken for that appliance. If your dentist recommends finishing it before, then you will have space develop in the area underneath the replacement tooth and it may or may not be a problem, but just so you know. Many patients elect a two phase treatment so that they can have a temporary prosthesis for a year and then proceed to the permanent bridge after all the bone healing as occurred. Hope this helps. Your gums aren’t bleeding because of anything you’re doing with your brushing, they’re bleeding because you have gum disease that needs treatment as soon as possible. There wouldn't be any need to place a sealant over a filling because sealants are intended to seal the pits and grooves of an unfilled tooth. If the filling happened to be composite and it was in a less-than-ideal condition, a sealant could be utilized to seal the margins (edges) of that filling, but it would be a temporary "fix."
