Get to know General & Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Folahan Ayoola, who serves patients in Texas.
Dr. Ayoola, an award-winning general & bariatric surgeon, is dedicated to patient care and believes that the best results are achieved when the physician and patient work together as a team. His special areas of interest include weight loss surgery, gastrointestinal surgery of all types including cancer of the intestinal tract, hernia repair, biliary surgery such as gallbladder removal, surgical treatment for acid reflux disease, and endoscopy.
Serving as the Founder of Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas & Rebirth Medical Aesthetics, his services are available in three convenient locations: Denton, Frisco, and Flower Mound, Texas. He believes that weight loss surgery is not a “one size fits all” proposition.
“No two patients are the same, so nothing we do is cookie-cutter. It’s my duty to educate my patients on the many weight loss surgery options available. Once I do, they can make informed decisions about which option is best for them” expressed Dr. Ayoola.
The first step toward a truly individualized weight loss plan is taking the time to know his patients and to understand their weight loss experiences and goals, then teaching them about their options. His goal is to get everyone’s BMI under 30 through diet, medication, surgical or non-surgical procedures.
Highly skilled at laparoscopic surgical techniques, he prefers to take a minimally invasive approach – even for complex cases – whenever possible to ensure faster, less painful recovery after surgery. He has successfully operated on patients that did not think a laparoscopic or minimally invasive approach could be performed on them due to previous surgery.
Supporting patients’ weight loss journeys, Dr. Ayoola is the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound. He led the program to its certification as a Center of Excellence within a year from its inception, working with his fellow doctors and hospital staff to help countless people struggling with obesity.
“Part of our strength is that we are all collegial. If one of our doctors sees a patient requiring a procedure they don’t offer, they will refer to another physician in the Program. This matters because it allows the patients to get the personalized care that they need rather than being shoehorned into a particular therapy. It reflects a team effort with the patient at the center” as stated by Dr. Ayoola.
Serving North Texas, he partners and performs procedures at the following prestigious hospitals: Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Trophy Club, Medical City Frisco (serving on multiple steering committees), and Medical City Las Colinas.
Growing up the son of a physician, Dr. Ayoola always assumed he’d be a doctor as well. “My siblings and I all talked about becoming physicians just like our dad. Then we grew up and the rest of them went other ways. But I always felt like I possessed the empathy to be a good doctor” he said.
Upon graduating with his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 2006, surgery became of a particular interest to him. He completed his residency in general surgery and his fellowship in bariatric and minimally-invasive surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.
While completing his residency training, he received the I.A. Bigger Award, which is the highest honor bestowed to surgical residents. He was also named Chief Resident of the Year by his peers – a tribute to his excellent skill, compassionate bedside manner, and leadership style.
A natural-born caregiver and an old-fashioned doctor, Dr. Ayoola is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
The doctor’s affiliations include the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (Fellow – FASMBS), the American College of Surgeons (Fellow – FACS), and the Texas Association of Bariatric Surgeons.
A speaker for multiple weight loss pharmaceutical companies, Dr. Ayoola educates physicians on the safe and efficacious use of these drugs. As an expert in the field, he also proctors and trains physicians interested in the use of the Da Vinci robotic platform for precise and safe robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery.
General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
Weight loss surgery, also called bariatric or metabolic surgery, is sometimes used as a treatment for people who are very obese. It can lead to significant weight loss and help improve many obesity-related conditions, such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Professionals who perform this type of surgery are known as bariatric surgeons.
Personal interests of Dr. Ayoola includes music, sports (Go Mavs!), and theater. He comes from a large family and loves spending time with all of them. He is married to his high school sweetheart, who is a nurse, and is currently trying to keep up with his two young boys.
