A native of Iraq, Dr. Al Salihi earned his medical degree from Al-Mustansiriya University College of Medicine in 1985, before receiving his Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) from the Iraqi Board for Medical Specialization at Baghdad Medical City and attaining his board certification through the Iraqi Board of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in 1993. He then went on to serve at several hospitals throughout the region, including the Ibn Al-Bittar Cardiac Surgery Center (1995-1999), Iraqi Center for Heart Diseases (1999-2006), and Al-Essra Hospital (2006-2008).

Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his fellowship in adult cardiac and thoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in 2011, followed by an additional fellowship in heart and lung surgery at the same educational venue in 2014.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Dr. Al Salihi is an active member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplant, the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network.
