    Ice, stretching, and Aleve. You should contact a podiatrist if you continue to have pain. You may need an injection for the inflammation and pain, a prescription for physical therapy, and/or custom foot orthoses. READ MORE

  • How do you treat a swollen heel?

    Easy answer is ice, anti-inflammatory medicine, and some compression with an ACE bandage. Further treatment depends on why there is swelling. READ MORE

  • Can a doctor do anything for a broken toe?

    A doctor will take an xray. Depending on the severity of the fracture, a doctor may simply have you buddy splint the toe to the toe next to it or if the fracture is displaced it may require manipulation or surgery. READ MORE

    It is generally not their area of expertise. Anyone can tell you to rest, put ice, wrap an ACE bandage, or tell you to elevate your leg. I would recommend seeing a Podiatrist though. We are specialists of the foot and ankle. READ MORE

  • How long should you take opioids after ankle surgery?

    While everyone's pain tolerance is different, opioids should be used as little as possible. Appropriate bandaging, ice, elevation, rest, and an anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen 800mg 3x a day, if no stomach problem) are usually sufficient to manage post-surgical pain. READ MORE

  • Can I take tramadol after ankle surgery?

    Yes. Tramadol is a pain medication. READ MORE

  • Is it possible to correct my ankles?

    While it is hard to accurately assess your foot and ankle positioning from the pictures you provided, the simple answer is yes. There are custom foot orthoses which can help to realign the foot and ankle joints. Gel inserts simply would not be sturdy enough to truly correct the joint alignment. If more aggressive correction is needed, there are supra-malleolar orthoses and even Ankle-foot-orthoses that can be used. The custom foot orthoses will probably be your best option at this time because of your age and they can go inside shoes easily. READ MORE

    Yes. Typically general anesthesia. Some anesthesiologists will perform nerve blocks (spinal or popliteal) depending on patient and preferences. READ MORE

  • Does a dislocated ankle need surgery?

    A dislocated ankle can oftentimes be relocated without surgery. It can be done right in the ER and requires local anesthesia as long as the patient can tolerate it. With that said, surgery may be required if there is damage to the tendons, ligaments, and or joint surfaces. Post-reduction X-rays and MRI would be needed to determine that. READ MORE

    Proprioceptive exercises which focus on balance and coordination. These will help the ankle regain dynamic strength and stability. It will also retrain the Golgi receptors, which help to balance. READ MORE

    Typically, general anesthesia would be used for ankle surgery. Sometimes an anesthesiologist can perform a nerve block such as an epidural or popliteal block. READ MORE

    If treated correctly, with short course of immobilization and bracing, ankle injuries generally get better in 2 to 4 weeks. If the injury is serious enough, it may not fully heal. READ MORE

    No. A chiropractor would not be good for ankle pain. It is not their area of expertise. There are many causes for ankle pain and many treatments ranging from conservative to surgical. A foot and ankle specialist (podiatrist) can obtain imaging of the bones and soft tissue, determine biomechanical imbalances, and perform manual testing maneuvers to determine why the ankle pain is occurring. Based on a full examination, treatment may include immobilization, bracing, injection therapy, or surgical intervention. Some issues that cause pain in the ankle may have a root cause in the foot as well. READ MORE

  • How long is the physical therapy after bunion surgery?

    2 to 3 times per week for 4 to 6 weeks is likely enough physical therapy after bunion surgery, if necessary. READ MORE

  • How do you relieve heel spur pain?

    Heel pain can be treated several ways. Patients can treat themselves by icing the painful area. Generally, I tell patients to use a frozen water bottle and roll their foot over it for 20 minutes every couple of hours as needed. You can also take over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like Aleve or Motrin. Stretching the foot and calf regularly is by far the most important way to relieve the pain and ultimately resolve the issue. It may be necessary to see a foot doctor who can do X-rays, provide targeted injection therapy, and provide custom foot orthoses. Surgery is the last option if all else fails. READ MORE

  • Do I need physical therapy after spraining my ankle?

    After suffering an ankle sprain, I typically recommend patients go through a period of rest, immobilization, ice, and elevation to alleviate pain and swelling. If a patient reports feeling "weakness" or like their ankle feels "like it's going to give out," I highly recommend physical therapy for proprioceptive exercises. These exercises help to reestablish the body's ability to regulate balance and stability. In today's world where everything is a click away, you may be able to rehab yourself at home. READ MORE

    Physical therapy is not typically necessary following bunion surgery. If prolonged pain, swelling, and/or stiffness is present, physical therapy may be beneficial to reduce those symptoms. READ MORE

  • How long does pain last after broken ankle surgery?

    Following ankle surgery, pain can persist for several days or weeks. The time depends on the extent of the injury, the extent of the surgical repair, and how well swelling is controlled. Generally, it is important to elevate the affected limb above the level of the heart for periods of time throughout the day, apply ice behind the knee of the affected limb for 20-minute intervals, and to take any medications as needed. Follow your doctor's orders regarding dressings and weight bearing status following the surgery. READ MORE

A highly-trained podiatrist, Dr. Chiodo joined Foot & Ankle Specialty, LLC in Secaucus, New Jersey after many years of both private and hospital experience.

With extensive training and experience in all areas of podiatric surgery, he specializes in forefoot reconstructive surgery, rearfoot reconstructive surgery, foot/ankle trauma surgery, sports medicine, pediatrics, diabetic wound care and limb salvage. He also offers state-of-the-art podiatry care, including ultrasound-guided injections, arthroscopy, and minimally invasive surgery.

Academically, Dr. Chiodo graduated with his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine as Magna Cum Laude and #3 in his class. He then went on to complete his residency training at University Hospital, formerly UMDNJ, in Newark, New Jersey where he received extensive training in all areas of podiatric medicine and surgery.

Practicing podiatry since 2009, he is affiliated with On The Go Podiatry, Clara Maass Medical Center, Hackensack University Medical Center, and University Hospital.
