Get to know Family Physician Dr. Gloria Laws, who serves patients in Alexandria, Louisiana.

A devoted family physician, Dr. Laws is the Chief Resident in the LSU Shreveport – Alexandria Family Medicine Residency program in Louisiana. Her journey from a registered nurse to a respected physician is nothing short of inspiring.

Beginning her career as a nurse, she garnered invaluable experience and knowledge over five years as a nurse practitioner in Texas. Despite being married and a mother of two young children, she refused to let anything deter her from her ultimate goal.

In 2016, Dr. Laws made the pivotal decision to transition to medical school, enrolling at Avalon University School of Medicine. One of the deciding factors for her choice was Avalon’s extensive network of clinical rotation sites at prestigious residency-affiliated hospitals. This facilitated uninterrupted clinical rotations, allowing her to complete her training efficiently.

Her dedication and hard work paid off as she successfully passed the USMLE Step 2 and graduated from Avalon. The fruits of her labor continued to flourish as she received over twenty interviews for residency programs, ultimately securing her top choice at LSU Shreveport-Alexandria Family Medicine Residency.

Entering residency in July 2021, Dr. Laws wasted no time in making an impression. Her commitment to excellence earned her the title of “most outstanding first-year resident.” As she progressed through her training, her leadership qualities shone brightly, culminating in her election as Chief Resident during her third year.

While family medicine was her primary focus, she harbored a deep passion for emergency medicine. This led her to pursue a fellowship in emergency medicine at the University of Tennessee, matching into her desired program. Following the completion of her residency in 2024, she will embark on the next phase of her journey, honing her skills and expertise in emergency medicine. When she is not busy in residency she works as an emergency medicine physician at multiple rural emergency hospitals in the state of Louisiana.

Family and Emergency medicine are medical specialties devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. A family physician or an Emergency Medicine physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions, stabilizing the unstable patients and referring to other specialists or facilities when appropriate.
