Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Ashraf Elshafei, who serves patients in New York.

Being a well-versed psychiatrist, Dr. Elshafei specializes in treating children, adolescents, and adults at Mind & Body Wellness Medical Center. With offices in Queens and Brooklyn, New York, he provides individual, family, and group counseling services in a professional and comfortable environment.

Serving as the Chief of the Addiction Medicine and Detoxification Unit at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, Dr. Elshafei treats a wide variety of disorders. These include heroin addiction treatment, suboxone withdrawal, and smoking cessation. In addition, he oversees a complete Weight Loss Center, treating both food addictions and eating disorders while utilizing psycho-pharmacology and promoting lifestyle changes and diet modification.

Alongside his clinical role, he serves as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry & the Associate Director of Residency Training at New York Medical College. 

Throughout his medical training, Dr. Elshafei graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University in Egypt in 1988. Upon relocating to the United States, he went on to perform his residency in psychiatry at New York Medical College.

With an unwavering commitment to his specialty, he is board-certified in psychiatry and neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.

A member of the American Society of Bariatric Medicine, Dr. Elshafei is also board-certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). The ABAM provides assurance to the American public that addiction medicine physicians have the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and treat addiction.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.
