About

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S #13530) with the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council and Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors.

I am fully trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), with additional training for Attachment-focused Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (AF-EMDR). I am also trained in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness techniques, and sand tray therapy, which can be especially helpful for those who find it challenging to express their thoughts and emotions verbally.

My approach to counseling is very client-centered and collaborative, as it is important for clients to actively participate in making and meeting goals to lead to positive and lasting outcomes. I create a safe environment where clients’ thoughts and feelings are valued, making it easier to explore challenges, build resilience, and find effective strategies to improve mental and emotional health.

I have been practicing as a counselor for more than 28 years in settings that include inpatient psychiatric hospitals, crisis and assessment teams, private practice, Denton County Juvenile Probation, The Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County (CACDC), residential treatment centers, school counseling, and in settings partnering with animals including farm animals and horses.

These experiences have allowed me the honor of working with people of all ages and backgrounds to support them in overcoming and managing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, severe traumas, other traumas, transitions such as graduating high school and college, problems with stress, self-esteem, divorce recovery, self-harm, adult ADHD, eating disorders, and grief and loss.

At Mata Counseling Services, I provide individual counseling for children, tweens/teens and adults. I am an LGBTQIA+ friendly counselor and I welcome all religious and ethnic backgrounds.

  • What is the best therapy for ADHD?

First, I am a counselor, not a doctor. Supportive therapy where the person can learn adaptive methods to manage problems that work for them is the best place to start. ADHD needs are different for everyone but everyone can successfully manage the difficulties they may be experiencing, whether that’s sleep issues, time management, or dealing with problems with low self-esteem that may be rooted in beliefs by themselves and/or others in childhood that they are defective. People with ADHD are not defective. They have neurodiverse brains that simply don’t work the same way as neurotypicals. It is not inferior, it is different. Learning to thrive in a world that is geared much more toward neurotypical living is key. Medication may be helpful to some, but it is important to know that there is so much more than just medication! READ MORE
