Before becoming a dental surgeon, Dr. Shumate was a mathematics teacher, as well as a track and football coach for Westlake High School and General Smallwood Middle School. Dr. Shumate is a currently a member of the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association, and the Academy of Osseointegration ( Dental Implant Association). He is also a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) is the national dental honor society, or the Phi Beta Kappa of dentistry. The organization was founded in 1914 at Northwestern University, and the Greek letters Omicron Kappa Upsilon were selected because together they translate as “Teeth and Health”. There are now approximately 60 chapters at dental schools across the U.S. and Canada. Dental surgery is any of a number of medical procedures that involve artificially modifying dentition; in other words, surgery of the teeth, gums and jaw bones.
