Get to know Pulmonologist Dr. Dan Westphal, who serves patients in Miramar, Florida.

A fellowship-trained pulmonologist, Dr. Westphal has been serving as the Reviewing Medical Director at Humana since February of 2019.

His duties and responsibilities include providing strategic direction and oversight of Medicare Advantage care members, reviewing cases for medical necessity and appropriateness; and conducting front-end reviews, peer-to-peer discussions, provider disputes, retro reviews, SNF reviews, LTACH reviews, IRF reviews, outpatient and inpatient authorizations, waivers, and out-of-network determination.

To date, Dr. Westphal has a strong track record of accomplishments in large healthcare systems including for-profit and nonprofit organizations. He focuses on quality, safety, service, and improvement of patient clinical outcomes utilizing exemplary management, analytical, organizational, and people skills.

Prior to his current endeavors, he served as Chief Medical Officer at Florida Medical Center (2008 – 2013), Chief Medical Officer at Boca Raton Community Hospital (2011 – 2013), Director of Medical Affairs at Memorial Healthcare System (2013 – 2015), Sr. Vice President/Chief Medical Officer at Broward Health (2015 – 2017), Vice President/Designated Institutional Official at Broward Health (2018), and Principal Faculty at Keiser University (2018 – 2019).

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Westphal graduated with his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1970. He then went on to perform his internship at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and his residency at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital. He also completed a fellowship at Harvard University, and received his Master of Business Administration degree from Nova Southeastern University.

Excelling in his field, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine and pulmonary disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Since April of 2021, Dr. Westphal has been serving as President of the American College of Medical Quality, presiding at all meetings of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Committee, and the annual business meeting of the College.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Medical Quality, he is a member of the Broward County Medical Association and the Florida Medical Association.
