How long does the adoption process normally take?
I was asked a similar question two years ago, and here was my answer. The simple answer is (a) to ensure that the adoptive parent(s) are suitable (b) to find a good match, and (c) in Texas to meet the requirements of the Texas Family Code, which requires that an adoption cannot be finalized until the child has been in the custody of the adoptive parents for at least six months. The process is explained in detail at https://www.adoptionanswersinc.com/adoption-information/adoption-process-in-texas. Please do not be discouraged. I have seen the heartaches of children in situations where adoption is the best and only answer, and the happiness and reward of successful placements. READ MORE
How do I not live in fear after being in a foster home and seeing terrible things?
You describe the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). You (obviously) do not describe how "Living in fear" impacts your daily activities of living. You should consider meeting with a licensed professional counsellor who can help your describe the terrible things you saw and talk you through your fears. Very often, recalling each specific terrible event in a safe environment will help the fear go away. I must add that what you describe is not the same as the PTSD that military personnel experience from events on the battlefield or serving in peace keeping operations. For them, the resolution is much harder. READ MORE
Why does my child feel depressed about returning to school after lockdown?
Because you are a good mum and he/she enjoyed being with you at home. It is also possible that he/she has few friends at school, or is picked on by one or more classmates, or does not get on well with one or more teachers. It is also possible that school work and the way it is now most often taught is just plain boring. Treasure the good teachers, who reach out to each child in their class with love and understanding. What is the easiest way to contact a social worker?
Probably: contact your insurance company web site and search for mental health office visit and LCSW. Enter your zip code and distance you wish to travel (say within 5 miles or 10 miles) and type of help you need. Also, if you have a friend or colleague who you know well who has good experience with a particular social worker, try them if you feel comfortable doing so. Also, your employer may have EAPs available (usually 5 counseling sessions in confidence with a social worker) at no cost to you. And the above answers presume looking for a social worker for counseling, and not for help navigating legal issues or to report other concerns such as child abuse. READ MORE
When should a social worker be called?
In Texas: if you feel someone is likely in immediate danger, dial 911, describe the situation, and and ask for a welfare check. Police will come within short time and do what is necessary. If they do not come quickly, call again. Otherwise, call Texas Department of Family and Protective Services 24-hour emergency abuse line: 1-800-254-5400. For further information, go to their website and see Report Abuse, Neglect or Exploitation. Process will be similar if you live in a different state. Quote from Texas Department of Family and Protective Services website: "Call our Abuse Hotline toll-free 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, nationwide, or report with our secure website and get a response within 24 hours." How do you handle the stress of being a social worker?
I am a self employed psychotherapist and have been a social worker for 30 years. In my professional relationship with clients there is no stress - I relate to them as human people and help them resolve their issues. When I started, billing and regulations were easy. But over the years billing has got more complicated and regulations have got more complex, in many instances perhaps unnecessarily so. The computer (and the need to use the computer) requires knowledge and effort that some people may find stressful. It is the difference between reading and enjoying Shakespeare and writing Shakespeare. READ MORE

Will I get my daughter's child if she goes to jail?
The simple answer is that child custody is decided by the courts. This may already have been determined when the father and your daughter parted company, but please take good legal advice urgently so that your grand daughter's best interests are safeguarded. My further recommendation is that under the circumstances you describe you take good legal advice urgently to safeguard your grand daughter's best interests even if your daughter does not go to jail, and you do not say if CPS is involved in which case even more so READ MORE
How much choice do you have with work assignments?
I am a psychotherapist and self employed. Therefore I have a great deal of choice over which patients to accept. My agreement with Medicare and Medicaid and some insurance companies is that I accept everyone that makes an appointment to see me, and I also need make referrals on an emergency basis to ensure treatment. Once accepted, I cannot refuse to give a patient ongoing care without referring him or her to an alternative counselor. READ MORE
