Blending Military and Clinical Expertise: Major Gabriel Godart’s Journey in Healthcare

Major Gabriel Godart, is a distinguished figure in the realm of healthcare, showcasing exceptional proficiency and commitment in the specialized domains of infectious diseases, travel medicine, and operational medicine. His role as a Certified Physician Assistant transcends various healthcare settings, encompassing the intricacies of inpatient care and the ever-evolving landscape of outpatient treatment. 

Currently, Major Godart holds the esteemed position of Emergency and Disaster Medicine Physician Assistant with the Florida Army National Guard’s 44th Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Civil Support Team (CST) in Starke, Florida, United States, a role he has diligently fulfilled since December 2023. Simultaneously, he serves as an Infectious Diseases and Travel Medicine Physician Assistant at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, where his versatile expertise is put to use in providing comprehensive care. This dual role not only underscores his professional acumen but also his unwavering dedication to serving his community during times of both peace and crisis.

In terms of academic achievements, Major Godart embarked on his medical educational journey in 2013 by earning a placement in the fiercely competitive and coveted Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP). It ultimately led to the attainment of both a Bachelor of Science in 2014 and a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) in 2015 from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, an institution affiliated with the program. To enhance his expertise in healthcare practice and administration, Major Godart successfully obtained a Doctor of Medical Science (DMS) from Butler University, graduating with a 3.94 GPA in 2022. Concurrently, he earned a Graduate Certificate in Physician Assistant Educator from the said establishment, maintaining an impeccable academic record from 2020 to 2022.

Major Godart’s pursuit of knowledge did not stop there, as he also earned a Graduate Certificate in Military Tropical Medicine from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2021. Currently, he is on track to complete a Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Infectious Diseases at the esteemed Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health by 2027, further enriching his academic and military endeavors from 2024 onwards.

Adding to his professional accolades, Major Godart is a Fellow Candidate of the Wilderness Medical Society, a Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, a member of the Society of Army Physician Assistants, and an Associate Member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. These affiliations highlight his commitment to staying abreast of the latest advancements in the medical field and actively contributing to the healthcare community.

Commencing his career in the US Army, Major Godart served in various capacities over nearly sixteen years, showcasing his versatility and dedication to healthcare. From his initial role as a Unit Armorer with the 2-113th Infantry Battalion, then transitioning to become the Battalion Physician Assistant for 3rd Battalion 20th Special Forces Group, and now actively engaged in emergency and disaster response with the 44th WMD CST, his military journey, including multiple overseas combat tours, has firmly established the groundwork for his future pursuits in healthcare. In his civilian healthcare career, he dedicated substantial time to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, focusing on surgical oncology before shifting his expertise to infectious diseases and travel medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

Major Godart's research interests span a wide array of infectious diseases, including osteomyelitis, multidrug resistant organisms (MDRO), fungal infections, and emerging and neglected tropical diseases. His recent case report, titled "A Rare Case of Candida Osteomyelitis of the Mandible Associated with Osteoradionecrosis and Biofilm Formation," is currently undergoing review and is anticipated to be published later this year, shedding light on a complex and unusual clinical scenario. Furthermore, Major Godart is slated to deliver a presentation on osteomyelitis and discitis at the Mayo Clinic 8th Annual Multidisciplinary Spine Care Conference in November 2024, hosted in Amelia Island, FL, showcasing his expertise and contributions to the field of infectious diseases. Major Godart was recently honored to be invited by the Mayo Clinic Florida Infectious Diseases Fellowship program director to teach an introductory bioterrorism course to their Infectious Diseases fellows on an annual basis. In the upcoming months, he intends to submit an application for the academic rank of Instructor of Medicine at the renowned Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine.

In terms of licenses and certifications, Major Godart holds a diverse range of qualifications. His advanced medical certifications encompass areas such as Advanced Hazmat Life Support (AHLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS), and Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC-MP). His proficiency in disaster response is underscored by certifications in Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS) and International Trauma Life Support (ITLS). As a licensed Physician Assistant in Florida and New York, Mr. Godart also possesses critical medical certifications like Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

On a personal note, Major Godart is fluent in both English and French, showcasing his multicultural adeptness and communication skills that further enrich his interactions with patients and peers.
