Get to know Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist Dr. Angela P.H. Burgess, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

A dedicated maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Dr. Burgess works with patients at UT Physicians Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. She also serves as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. 

With a multifaceted focus encompassing maternal mortality, complications, and comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, chronic hypertension, preeclampsia, and health inequities. Dr. Burgess brings a wealth of expertise to her field. Her academic pursuits are complemented by a personal interest in nutrition within clinical settings, reflecting her holistic approach to healthcare. 

Born in New York with Guyanese heritage, Dr. Burgess spent her formative years living in various countries including Nigeria, Guyana, and England. Educationally, her journey began with an undergraduate degree in Developmental Biology and African American Studies from The University of Rochester, followed by the completion of her medical education at New York Medical College. Her dedication to research, while significant, is surpassed only by her fervent desire to effect transformative change within the healthcare landscape.

Subsequently, during her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Sinai-Richmond Medical Center, her passion for maternal health and pregnancy crystallized, propelling her to pursue a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Texas Children’s Hospital – Baylor College of Medicine.

Passionate about her profession, the doctor is board-certified in maternal-fetal medicine & obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Burgess is deeply engaged in community service, actively volunteering with organizations such as the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, and the Houston Food Bank.

Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and fetus prior to, during, and shortly after pregnancy. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are physicians who subspecialize within the field of obstetrics. For pregnant women with chronic health problems or other complications during their pregnancy, MFM specialists work to keep them as healthy as possible while their bodies carry a pregnancy. They also care for women who face unexpected problems that develop during pregnancy such as early labor, bleeding or high blood pressure.
