Get to know General Surgeon, Dr. Naga Thatimatla, who serves patients in Florida

Dr. Thatimatla is a board-certified general surgeon practicing at AdventHealth Medical Group General Surgery and Bariatrics at Dade City in Florida. He specializes in bariatric surgery using minimally invasive surgical techniques, including the LINX treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), acid reflux, heartburn and bloating. The Medical Director of Surgery at AdventHealth Dade City, Dr. Thatimatla has a second practice location at AdventHealth Medical Group Multispecialty at San Antonio in San Antonio, Florida.

Dr. Thatimatla received his Bachelor of Medicine cum Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBBS) at Guntur Medical College NTR in Andhra Pradesh, India, in 2000. He then relocated to the United States, where he conducted general surgery residencies at Seton Hall University School of Health and Medical Sciences and St John Detroit Riverview Hospital in New Jersey (2007 – 2010) and St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri (2010 – 2012)

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS), the doctor attained board certification in general surgery through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. 

Bariatric surgery includes a variety of procedures performed on people who are obese. Long term weight loss through standard of care procedures is largely achieved by altering gut hormone levels that are responsible for hunger and satiety, leading to a new hormonal weight set point.

On a more personal note, Dr. Thatimatla speaks Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu in addition to English.
