Dr. VanderWel is a board certified general surgeon, and an experienced bariatric and metabolic surgeon. He practices at Eviva, the leading minimally invasive bariatric surgery center in the Pacific Northwest.
Passionate about being a part of the life-changing process of bariatric surgery, Dr. VanderWel makes an effort to get to know his patients and their families. He believes health is improved when a patient is treated as a whole person, not by individual problems.
Committed to furthering the field of minimally invasive surgery, Dr. VanderWel is constantly evaluating ways to improve the patient experience. He was the first provider in the Pacific Northwest to offer the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) and is now the busiest and most experienced ESG provider in the western United States. He also instructs ESG training courses and is requested to speak nationally and internationally.
After growing up in Colorado, Dr. VanderWel attained a Degree in Biology from Dordt College in Iowa. He then went on to earn his Medical Degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
Furthering his training, Dr. VanderWel performed his surgical residency at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, during which time he developed a passion for bariatric surgery. Subsequently, he completed his fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon.
Board certified in general surgery, Dr. VanderWel is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Among his professional affiliations, Dr. VanderWel is a Candidate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
