  • Is it bad for babies to be raised in prison?

I think this is a complicated question. I think there are alot of perspectives to consider. The main thread of thinking I have in this scenerio is that it can go well and it could go wrong. I am not going to make a moral judgement on it, because the responsibility to rear this children to not have stunted development is going to be on the parent and caregivers in place. The caregivers have the right and can make decisions which will not stunt this child's development, but choices can be made which would have lasting impacts as the child ages through the jail system and back out into the world. Great question and concept to apply a child development lens to. READ MORE

I appreciate this question, as I started my career working in a medical clinic with HIV patients. A social worker in this setting will be a resource to help navigate what resources can help your mother with engaging in her enviroment. Depending on this situation, there may be programs and social skill building in place, but there may be other considerations regarding neurocognitive disorders given the change of enviroment and reported behavior concern, which may need to be ruled out. The social worker would be doing this coordination of care on behavior of your mother. READ MORE

  • Is obesity a mental?

obesity is not strictly a mental health consideration, though our mental health does have a primary role in the development and behaviors surrounding food intake and nutrition. I would consider therapeutic interventions and support regarding the primary thoughts, emotions, and behaviors driving the current weight status with a person centered, self compassion based approach. There are also great movements to honor beauty and health at every size, which helps empower self love for all people, regardless of size. READ MORE
