Get to know Emergency Physician and Family Medicine Practitioner Dr. Elbio R. Sabao, who serves the population of Merced, California. Dr. Sabao graduated with his Medical Degree from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina in 1992, giving him over two decades of experience in his field. After obtaining his Medical Degree he completed his general surgery residency in Argentina before relocating to the United States where he completed his family medicine residency with Adventist Health System. Wanting to further his training he completed his emergency medicine fellowship with the Mercy Medical Center. Dr. Sabao is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. To stay up to date in his field he remains a professional member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He currently practices as an Emergency Physician and Family Medicine Practitioner with Benchmark Physicians and is affiliated with Mercy Medical Center, Hospital Bella Vista, Good Samaritan Hospital. He holds an expertise in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine, and Independent Physician Contractor. When not working Dr. Sabao enjoys cooking in his free time. Emergency Medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with the care of illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention. As first-line providers, emergency physicians manage patients of all ages with undifferentiated ailments of all types. They are primarily responsible for initiating resuscitation and stabilization and beginning investigations and interventions to diagnose and treat illnesses in the acute phase. Emergency physicians generally practice in hospital emergency departments, pre-hospital settings via emergency medical services, and intensive care units, but may also work in primary care settings such as urgent care clinics. Emergency physicians may subspecialize in disaster medicine, medical toxicology, ultrasonography, critical care medicine, hyperbaric medicine, sports medicine, palliative care, or aerospace medicine. Family medicine is the medical specialty which provides continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is a specialty in breadth that integrates biological, clinical and behavioral sciences. The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system, as well as every disease entity. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor.
