Does a gum graft hurt?
Depending on extent of the work, source of graft (autogenous vs non autogenous) and the technique used, pain may vary. Bad gum recession
Switch to an ultrasoft toothbrush, and make sure you are brushing gently, not with excessive force. In the meantime, you can use antisensitivity toothpastes such as Sensodyne and also Prevident gel (fluoride gel) or MI paste to be applied on the surfaces where you are sensitive, 2-3 times daily. You might feel decreased sensitivity within a month or so of applying these products. Be mindful of the fact that oftentimes, gum grafting is not the remedy to cure sensitivity because we don't achieve complete root coverage. Sensitivity is mostly managed by mineralizing agents and, in extreme cases, a tooth-colored filling could be considered three months after gum grafting in the area that remains sensitive. READ MORE

What could happen when I get my gum surgery?
Some degree of bruising, swelling, oozing is expected after gum surgery and usually disappears within a week to 10 days after surgery. There is possibility of infection (Less than 5% of cases), numbness (depending on the region and proximity to nerves innervating the area), graft failure (5-10% of cases), It's important to know that gum grafting in general whether with ur own tissue or cadaver tissue is amongst the highly successful procedures periodontists offer, however each & every surgery that we do has its own complication rate associated with it. Recovery is less than a week for early healing, (sutures are removed within a week to 2 weeks after surgery) and pain/bruising could be managed with analgesics and steroids to a great degree.
