  • What Is Cataract Surgery?

Now that we know cataracts are like a cloudy M&M in the eye (see previous post for details), what is cataract surgery? Basically, cataract surgery is where I make a tiny incision in the eye, go in, open the shell of the M&M, clean out the cloudy chocolate center part and then replace that...

  • Cataract: An M&M in the Eye?!

Cataract: An M&M in the Eye!?!Yes, my patients come to me every day having been told they have cataracts, but they do not know what exactly a cataract is. Very simply, a cataract is the lens inside the eye that helps focus the picture of the outside world onto the back of the eye (the retina)....

  • How long do I have to put drops in my eyes after cataract surgery?

Different surgeons use different drops with different lengths of time. Your surgeon should have detailed how many drops and how long to use for each medicine. READ MORE

  • How long is vision blurry after Lasik?

Over 97% of our lasik patients are 20/20 or better the next morning. Various things, including the amount of correction and just healing process can cause the vision to come in more slowly but lasik should be a quick recover. Remember to use the drops, follow your surgeons directions and use artificial tears. READ MORE

  • Are you sitting or lying down during cataract surgery?

You are lying down, typically with oral or IV sedation to help relaxation. READ MORE

  • Will I still be nearsighted after cataract surgery?

You should not be nearsighted after cataract surgery unless you discuss it with your surgeon and you want to be set at near to recreate your myopic vision READ MORE

  • Cataract Surgery

I don’t ever do surgery on both eyes on the same day so there are some risks that her surgeon needs to discuss with your mom. Discharge is always a little disconcerting but some redness can be absolutely normal. Given the risks with bilateral surgery on the same day I would definitely reach out to her surgeon. READ MORE

  • Can I use my phone after Lasik?

    Yes READ MORE

  • A stye or something more

“Styes “ , also known as chalazion/hordeolums are infections of the oil glands in the eyelid. Warm compresses along with topical or systemic antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment. Sometimes they need to be drained in the office. If the redness and tenderness is spreading along the eyelid, it may be turning into an infection of the skin tissue, also known as preseptal cellulitis. I would recommend having a provider look at it in the office READ MORE

  • When should you see a doctor for dry eyes?

    Yes READ MORE

  • What is the recovery time for cataract surgery?

Typically my patients go back to living life the next day with a few precautions like no rubbing on the eye, not a lot of water in the eye, and no heavy lifting. Check with your surgeon for his recommendations READ MORE

  • Are contacts better than glasses?

There are risks with wearing contacts but with appropriate education and training on how to care for and use contacts, they are a great option. Other option is LASIK or PRK to get rid of both READ MORE

  • Can contact pain be corrected?

Many things can be wrong, incorrect strength, astigmatism, overcorrection, glasses made poorly. Bottom line, go back and get the glasses checked by whoever made them READ MORE

  • Can wearing contacts everyday damage your eyes?

If you wear them too long or don’t take care of them appropriately, contacts can definitely damage the eyes. READ MORE

  • How do you treat astigmatism in your eyes?

    Glasses, contacts, LASIK READ MORE

  • About Astigmatism and Glasses

Interesting question, astigmatism is irregular shape of the cornea on the front of the eye. Most people describe it as being more shaped like the side of a foot instead of symmetrically round like a basketball. Astigmatism, especially larger amounts of astigmatism can distort the shape of an image. Without seeing your glasses and checking your eyes I can not say whether the image without the glasses or with the glasses is the distorted image. The easiest way to find out is find something that is a perfect square(measure with a measuring tape) and then look at it with and without the glasses. READ MORE

  • Can you be under anesthesia for eye surgery?

Most eye surgery is done with some level of anesthesia. Depending on the procedure, patient and surgeon's comfort different levels of anesthesia may be needed. READ MORE

  • What happens if you wear contacts for more than 8 hours?

Do you effective contact lenses on the surface of the eye and more specifically the cornea are all depending on what type of contact lens you’re wearing. One of the biggest factors is how well oxygen and other nutrients pass through the contact lens to the cornea. If the cornea is deprived of nutrients and oxygen it can stimulate the eye to increase vascularization at the edge of the cornea to increase blood flow to help the cornea survive. Also if contact lens are worn more than they are designed for it can cause scarring and other damage on the surface of the eye. It can also cause abrasions which make you more susceptible to infections or scarring. READ MORE

  • Why does my eye always burn after having LASIK?

There are several causes of burning in the eyes (with or without a history of LASIK). Having had LASIK, the two most common causes of hypersensitivity and “burning“ sensation is ocular surface dryness. Definitely work with your LASIK surgeon to minimize this, if it’s adding to your difficulties. They should be able to tell through their examinations if there are signs of dryness. The second common cause of hypersensitivity after LASIK (which can add to dryness) is that your eyes have gone a long time with a protective covering from wind/dust/allergens/debris, i.e., your glasses or contacts. But after LASIK, if we are no longer wearing contacts or glasses, the surface of the eye is more exposed to the world than ever before. Hopefully this helps. The bottom line is that it can be from a lot of different things, and I would recommend you follow up with your LASIK surgeon to see what needs to be done to minimize this for you. READ MORE

  • How long does it take for pink eye to go away?

Typically about 3-4 weeks but can be much longer. If it’s lasting longer than that I would definitely recommend a full eye exam with your doctor to make sure there is nothing else going on and to make sure the viral conjunctivitis (pink eye) is not causing any other problems in the eye that may need treatment. READ MORE

  • How long do the results of Lasik surgery last?

For most patients the benefits from LASIK lasts until the natural lens inside the eye starts to stiffen around 40-45( this is the normal loss of near vision called “presbyopia”) READ MORE

  • My daughter has a stye on her eye. What's the best way to get rid of it?
