Can ear wax buildup cause deafness?
Ear wax similar to an ear plug will decrease you hearing if it totally blocks your ear canal. Also like an ear plug your hearing goes back to normal once removed. READ MORE
Heavy Nasal Congestion
There are many caused of nasal obstruction. The common ones include nasal septal deviation, swelling of the sidewalks of the nose sometimes caused by allergies chronic irritation or sinusitis, nasal polyps and rarely others masses amongst other causes. It is hard to tell what is going on without a full history and physical. I would recommend getting seen by a local ENT that can do a full exam. READ MORE
Why do I have itching in my ears every morning?
Itchy ears can be a challenging problem. The skin in your ear canal is effected by similar things to the skin all over your body, and can be treated similarly. I find that it occurs even more commonly in patients that routinely clean the inside of their ears with a-tips or other devices. At best cleaning the ear canals clears all the ear wax. This is not a good idea as ear wax keeps your canals moist (and stop itching) and has anti-infectious properties. Q tips can also scratch your canal, pound in wax, and occasionally injury your ear drum or deeper structure of your ear if forced in. I would recommend an ear exam to rule out a wax impaction a chronic infection, obstruction, or anything concerning (which is rare), and stop q-tip use (your ear will clean itself). If it is just dry skin, you can have your doctor consider as needed steroid drop (used sparingly to reduce risk of a fungal infection) to reduce irritation. READ MORE
My son is feeling dizzy and the doctor says its vertigo. Is it possible for a 7 year old to have vertigo?
Dizzy is a non-specific word that can mean lots of different things to different people. Vertigo is the sensation of rotary (like the room or you are spinning, kind of like if you spun in a circle then stop suddenly) it can be associated with nausea and vomiting and other symptoms as well. It is possible for a 7 year old to get it, however it can be challenging to diagnose in children. A hearing test should be preformed whenever new vertigo is diagnosed. Sometimes a neurological workup or MRI is appropriate as well based on the associated symptoms. READ MORE
