General and cosmetic dentists, Dr. Peterson and Dr. Smith, are currently serving patients’ dental needs at their dental practice, Heart of the City Dental, in Burnsville, Minnesota. With years of collective experience, they utilize state-of-the-art equipment in a clean, modern office with private treatment rooms to provide exceptional dental care to those in need. Both dentists have an eye for detail and gentle care, thereby providing each patient with a radiant, healthy smile. 

Both Dr. Peterson and Dr. Smith are members of numerous professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, the Minnesota Dental Association, the St. Paul District Dental Society, the Spear Education Faculty Club, and multiple local study clubs. They also spend many hours a year attending the best continuing education courses around the country to provide patients with the best dentistry. Furthermore, they have been chosen several times by Mpls. St. Paul Magazine and the Burnsville community as Minnesota’s Top Dentists!

Dr. Tanya S. Peterson 

Born and raised in Burnsville, Dr. Peterson attended the College of St. Benedict and St. Cloud State University, where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science. She then went on to earn her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1997. After graduation, she began teaching in the Restorative Sciences Department at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

Heart of the City Dental was started as Schulz Family Dental by her father in 1970 and she has worked in all areas of the office since 1987. Dr. Peterson is dedicated to providing excellent dental care in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. She believes that extensive continuing education for herself and her staff is the best way to provide her patients with the most advanced options available.

On a more personal note, she enjoys volunteering for Donated Dental Services, Team Smile, and Mission Outpost. She and her husband, Jeff, have a son, Kaden, and daughter, Kalia, along with two dogs and a cat. When she is not working, Dr. Peterson enjoys waterskiing, paddleboarding, and cross-country skiing.

Dr. Heidi Smith 

Born and raised and currently living in Apple Valley, Dr. Smith completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Minnesota. She graduated with honors with her bachelor’s degree in 1997, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2003. After graduation, she maintained her long-time ties with the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and taught in their Restorative Sciences Department. 

The daily variety and challenges that dentistry offers are Dr. Smith’s favorite aspects of practicing and she looks forward to what is in store for the ever-advancing field of dentistry. She also enjoys volunteering her dental skills at Mission Outpost, Team Smile, and Mission of Mercy. 

In her free time, she enjoys waterskiing, traveling, and reading. She and her husband, Brian, have a son, Griffin, and two cats.
