  • What temperature does a child need to go to the hospital?

    There is no specific temperature. If the fever stays for a long period and will not go down with Tylenol or Motrin, or if there is a febrile seizure then they should be evaluated. But fever is the way the body fights infection and fever isn’t necessarily bad, but if it stays for long periods, won’t go down with Tylenol or Motrin, is there for 5 days or more, or is causing a complication such a febrile seizure, then the child should be evaluated.   • How can I help my child with bronchiolitis?

    Keep them hydrated and help them by suctioning their nose the best you can. You can use saline with nasal suctioning to help loosen up any dried mucous. Humidifiers can help, especially while sleeping. If they are not drinking well and having good wet diapers, they may need IV fluids, or if they are struggling to breathe they may need oxygen, so those are two reasons to take them to the hospital/doctor.     You should carry an EPI PEN with you, or make sure your son has one with him in case he is stung. There is not a lot to do to prevent the sting, other than stay out of bee infested areas.     Children over 5-6 years of age can often tolerate skin allergy testing, but that requires a referral to an allergist and for them to tolerate the test.     As long as they are the right dose, and your child isn’t allergic to that antibiotic, they should be safe. There are a couple of classes of antibiotics that are less safe for children, but most providers shouldn’t be prescribing these.     The best thing I have found is to ensure they have all the therapies in place to help him continue to progress as much as possible, with speech, physical, and occupational therapies.
