Get to know Pain Management Specialist & Anesthesiologist Dr. Michael Skaliy, who serves patients in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Dr. Skaliy, aka “Dr. Mike,” is a pain management specialist and anesthesiologist who serves as the Founder & CEO of Atlanta Spine Specialists in Alpharetta, Georgia. He and his staff are passionate about educating patients to ensure the best possible solution is presented and in a safe and ethical manner.

Atlanta Spine Specialists specializes in minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of painful spine disorders. The mission of the practice is to provide state-of-the-art stem cell therapy as well as other regenerative medical treatments to help patients regain a pain-free life.

A firm believer that medicine is a rapidly changing field, Dr. Skaliy has continued to stay up to date to bring the latest cutting-edge therapies into his practice. Most recently, he introduced stem cell therapy and minimally invasive same-day spine surgery, which is done through a small device the size of a pencil. With the advent of minimally invasive therapy and stem cell therapy, he has moved into regenerative medicine to try to give long-term pain relief by reversing the problem that is causing the pain, thereby providing long term pain relief; rather than the shorter-term treatments that are commonly available.

Born in Savannah, Georgia, Dr. Skaliy grew up in the Atlanta area. He attended the pre-medical program at Tulane University, and then went on to graduate from the Medical College of Georgia with his medical degree. He attended the University of Tennessee for his four-year residency in anesthesiology and pain management.

Before long, he became board-certified in pain management by the American Board of Pain Medicine, whose mission is to improve the quality of pain medicine. In addition, he became board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology, which is a non-profit organization committed to partnering with physicians to advance the lifelong learning and exceptional patient care.

For a period of ten years, Dr. Skaliy was Chairman of Anesthesiology and Pain Management for Georgia Baptist Medical Center. He served on the Board of Trustees of the hospital for eight years and was Chief of Staff of the hospital prior to going into private practice and opening Atlanta Spine Specialists.

In order to stay up to date in his field, the doctor remains a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the International Society of Spinal Injectionists, and the American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians. He also remains affiliated with Surgical Care Affiliates, North Fulton Regional Hospital, and Northwoods Surgery Center.

Pain management is a branch of medicine employing an interdisciplinary approach for easing the suffering and improving the quality of life of those living with chronic pain. A pain management specialist is a doctor who specializes in pain medicine, focusing on the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of pain.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature, anesthesiologists also measure the patient’s respiration.

In his personal life, Dr. Skaliy is a devoted husband and father of two sons.
