  • Hepatic function blood test?

Heavy drinking preceding a hepatic panel test could certainly cause abnormal levels. Best thing is to repeated in the absence of drinking. Also, the degree of abnormality is important. Perhaps there’s more than just alcohol playing a role in this abnormality. It is difficult to assess without knowing all your specifics, however, I would say that really no amount of alcohol is good for you and excessive is definitely detrimental. READ MORE

  • What does it mean if you have a spot on your liver?

A spot on the liver is a way of explaining an abnormal imaging study, particularly if unclear what kind of abnormality that is. It could be a collection of blood vessels, a cyst (thin-walled lesion filled with fluid), or a solid lesion that can be cancerous or not. It all depends on why imaging was done, what type of imaging that was, the size of the spot, underlying liver disease or not, etc. Be sure to ask more details if all you were told is, "You have a spot on the liver." Does it require follow-up? Does it require different imaging or biopsy?  READ MORE

  • Does yellow skin mean liver failure?

  • Fatty Liver?

You have risk factors for fatty liver. In fatty liver, it is very important to control those risk factors such including the diabetes and cholesterol. Your fibroscan shows severe fat content, but minimal to no scarring, assuming that the interpretation chart on that machine is the same as on the one I use. As far as monitoring, it's always good to repeat the fibroscan every 1-2 years to reassess. With respect to the pain, as much as it seems that the liver pain is due to the right sided location, it is infrequently due to the liver. More common is related to things like constipation as the colon makes a sharp turn under the liver area, it can be residual pain from pneumonia irritating the lining of your chest, muscle pain, gallbladder pain, etc. The specifics of the pain can help identify the cause, but at times, additional testing is needed.  READ MORE

  • What happens when you go through liver failure?

It all depends on the cause and whether it is acute or acute on chronic. For instance, liver failure from Tylenol/acetaminophen many times resolves with supportive care, other causes may need a liver transplant. If transplant is not an option and there is meaningful recovery...death is usually the outcome. READ MORE

  • How do doctors diagnose fatty liver disease?

Fatty liver is extremely common. It can be alcoholic or nonalcoholic. The diagnosis involves liver imaging like ultrasound, MRI showing fatty infiltration of the liver and blood tests can facilitate the diagnosis as well. Sometimes a liver biopsy is needed, but the noninvasive methods available are very good and the rates of liver biopsy have decreased significantly.  CS READ MORE
