Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Sandeep S. Walia, who serves patients in Bakersfield, California.

Dr. Walia is a refractive and comprehensive ophthalmologist with a focus in eyelid surgery, LASIK, glaucoma, MIGS, cataract surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, intravitreal injections, and medical management of posterior segment diseases like age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He is a part of the team of professionals at Southwest Eyecare and Laser Medical Associates.

Southwest Eyecare and Laser Medical Associates has been a part of the Bakersfield, California community for over 30 years. The experts take their role in each of their patients’ lives with a great sense of pride and responsibility, helping them navigate through eye care needs. From common eye problems to eye surgery, the eyecare group strives to help patients achieve their best possible vision and eye health.

Born in Denver, Colorado and growing in Houston, Texas, Dr. Walia earned his bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin while maintaining a full-time job and working as a coaching intern for the Texas Longhorns. He continued his educational pursuit by getting his Master of Business Administration degree from Chadron State and attending medical school at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Lubbock.

Upon graduation from medical school, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the busy Emory Eye Center with over a dozen publications. Additionally, he furthered his surgical training by completing extensive cataract surgery training at Harvard Medical School. 

With extensive background in medical retina, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology through the American Board of Ophthalmology, an independent, nonprofit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists (eye physicians and surgeons) in the United States. He holds certifications in iStent, miLoop, LenSx, Allegretto, and PanOptix.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

Away from the office, Dr. Walia loves spending time with his family, being involved in the community as guest lecturer at CSUB, and rooting for his Denver Broncos.
