Get to know Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. David Thomas, who serves patients in Somerset, Kentucky. 

Dr. Thomas is an infectious disease specialist in practice with Lake Cumberland Medical Associates in Somerset, Kentucky.

Lake Cumberland Medical Associates is a Rural Health Clinic that provides Somerset and the Lake Cumberland region with top physicians in family practice, internal medicine, and pediatrics. The facility offers a wide range of services including preventive care, treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, diagnostic testing, and occupational medicine. Dr. Thomas is also the division Chief and Medical Director of Infectious Disease and the hospital epidemiologist for Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Thomas serves as a Clinical Professor of Infectious Disease at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine and as Clinical Adjunt Facutly for Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine.

His acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 2012. He then went on to perform his residency in internal medicine at New York Medical College in 2015, and his fellowship in infectious disease at the University of Connecticut in 2017. He has also completed an additional partial fellowship in hematology & medical oncology at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University in 2018.

With an unwavering commitment to his speciality, Dr. Thomas is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

The doctor’s particular interests include molecular virology, viral oncology & tumor immunology, carcinogenesis, particularly as it relates to infections and also transplant medicine. He is also fascinated with HLH and other cytokine storms, bone marrow & HSCT, as well as CAR T-cell therapies and transplant/oncologic infections. 

To excel in his efforts, Dr. Thomas remains a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America, the International Antiviral Society, the HIV Medicine Association, the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the Radiological Society of North America. He is on the Editorial Board of Annals of Hematology & Oncology Research, Annals of Carcinogenesis, and Annals of Hematology & Oncology.

Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with prevention, the diagnosis, and treatment of infections of all types. An infectious disease specialist’s practice also consists of managing nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections and care of infections in the immunocompromised patient.
