Get to know Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility Specialist Dr. Lauren N. C. Johnson, who serves patients in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Recognized as a top reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist, Dr. Johnson practices at Carolina Conceptions in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Established in 2006, Carolina Conceptions is a full-service, private fertility clinic located two blocks from REX Hospital. It emphasizes a team approach to care, with four reproductive endocrinologists who are certified in both reproductive endocrinology & infertility as well as obstetrics & gynecology. They are compassionate, personable, highly trained and experienced professionals, dedicated to maximizing chances for success and making having a family a reality.
“Infertility treatment is very personal and for some patients, it can be a lengthy process. I enjoy building relationships with patients, and I get to know my patients well. It is often bittersweet when my patients conceive and return to the care of their obstetricians because that means that I don’t get to see them anymore!” expressed Dr. Johnson.
Having been in North Carolina her whole life, she completed her undergraduate training at North Carolina State University, where she was a Park Scholar and graduated summa cum laude with degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry. She earned her medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where she was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha and graduated with honors. Dr. Johnson then went on to complete her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center in 2011, during which time she was selected as an administrative chief resident and received an award for her skill in minimally invasive surgery.
Following her residency, Dr. Johnson completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Pennsylvania in 2014. In addition to her clinical training, she earned a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, received over $100,000 in grant funding, presented her research at national meetings, and published several peer-reviewed papers. She also worked closely with leaders in the field to develop expertise in oncofertility and fertility preservation.
A Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), she is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology & reproductive endocrinology and infertility by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The ABOG is a non-profit organization that provides board certification for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States and Canada.
In the coming years, Dr. Johnson hopes to see even more advancements in the field of reproductive endocrinology – especially in slowing down the decline in women’s fertility. “I would love to see more research into extending women’s natural fertility. Women start to have declines in their egg count at age 35. Egg count and quality are dramatically lower among women in their 40’s. Currently, there is no way to stop or slow that process.” If this could be achieved, millions of couples who struggle to build a family would be helped.
Reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) is a surgical subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology that trains physicians in reproductive medicine addressing hormonal functioning as it pertains to the reproduction, as well as the issue of infertility. While most REI specialists primarily focus on the treatment of infertility, reproductive endocrinologists are trained to also evaluate and treat hormonal dysfunctions in females and males outside after the reproductive years.
Selected by her peers as one of Charlotte’s “Top Doctors” in 2020, Dr. Johnson appeared on television and radio to promote infertility awareness. She also volunteered as a mentor for students in Wingate University’s Physician Assistant training program.
An avid runner and outdoor enthusiast, she is grateful that the Charlotte area has several public parks. She also loves the big city perks and small town feel Charlotte is known for with access to restaurants, sporting events, and Broadway shows.
In her spare time, she enjoys reading, running, and spending time with her family.
