How long does it take for anxiety medication to work?
The textbook answer for an SSRI/Antidepressant medication is 4-6 weeks, however, in that case it is possible that efficacy will only be appreciated at a higher dose if nothing changes in that first chunk of time. Medications like buspirone take quite a bit longer and are usually an augmenting or part of dual therapy with an FDA-approved medication for a DSM5 anxiety disorder. Benzos naturally work quickly and can provide significant relief if the distress is truly intolerable - however, at that point, it would likely be wise to attain a higher level of care (than outpatient).
