Does your upper stomach feel tight in early pregnancy?
Hello and thank you for your question. Yes, some women may experience tightening of their abdomen throughout the entire pregnancy. The tightening can be contractions and contractions that do not cause cervical change or dilation of the cervix are considered false contractions or Braxton Hicks contractions. There may be several reasons for the contractions but many times the cause is unknown. One possibility could be dehydration and can resolve by increasing your water intake if this is the cause. It could also be reflux, urinary tract infection, vaginal infection or any infection, or irritability of your uterus as it is growing and stretching to accommodate your growing pregnancy. Most important thing is to keep an eye on them for changes in their pattern or frequency. Contractions that are consistent, getting stronger and stronger, occurring every 5-7min and lasting longer than 2hrs maybe a sign of pre-term labor and should be evaluated. Hope this helps. Good luck in your pregnancy. Dr. Cunningham READ MORE
Why do I feel pregnant but the test is negative?
Hello and thank you for your question. It could be anything from symptoms caused by some other issue to a rare medical condition where women think they’re pregnant and actually exhibit symptoms of pregnancy, but are not pregnant. Stress could also cause some of the symptoms of pregnancy even in the wake of a negative pregnancy test. Deep breathing and meditation as well as yoga can help you re-center and can be a way to help de stress if stress is a factor in your life. A blood test for pregnancy is more sensitive than a urine test, so if think you’re pregnant you could have a blood test performed to determine your pregnancy status. Hope this helps. Good luck in your journey. Dr. Cunningham READ MORE
What are signs your water is about to break?
Hello and thank you for your question. The signs of labor include contractions every 5-7min lasting longer than 2hrs and getting stronger and stronger, a gush of fluid or trickle of fluid from the vagina. If you experience any of these things you should head to the hospital for evaluation. Loss of mucous plug is another sign that labor is near. Once mucous plug is lost you could go into labor immediately or days later. The most consistent thing in pregnancy is time; time reveals all. No doctor has a crystal ball that can tell you exactly when you will go into labor or when your water will break, but time will tell all. Your water could also break prematurely or before labor even starts in the wake of an infection or trauma. Hope this helps. Dr. Cunningham READ MORE
Why is my period blood brown for 3 days?
Hello and thank you for your question. Brown blood is oxidized blood meaning old blood. This blood was likely in your vagina during your period and with gravity is slowly working its way out of the vagina and because it is not the result of active bleeding we see it as brown as it oxidizes. There could also be tissue from the lining of your uterus that is shed during menses mixed in with the blood that helps make the color brown as well. Hope this helps. Dr. Cunningham READ MORE
