Get to know Internist Dr. Sanjay Karatam, who serves patients in Florida.

Dr. Karatam is a well-versed internist who is licensed to practice medicine in Florida, New Hampshire, Missouri, and Texas. His career objective is to support quality, cost effective care to patients and their families, while being the chief advocate for the best interest of his patients and their PCPs.

A resident member of the American College of Physicians & the Vice President of Recruiting at Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity, he is board-certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

After graduating from high school in 2010, Dr. Karatam went on to earn his medical degree from the American University of Antigua College of Medicine in 2017. Furthering his training, he performed a clerkship in internal medicine at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center (Head of the Ventilator Unit), a clerkship in general surgery at Trumbull Regional Medical Center, a clerkship in obstetrics-gynecology at Dekalb Medical Center, and a clerkship in psychiatry at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. From June of 2017 until June of 2020, he served a residency in internal medicine within the HCA Healthcare/Morsani College of Medicine GME program at Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, Florida.

With extensive clinical research experience, Dr. Karatam served as a Co-Principal Investigator at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, collaborating alongside Dr. Kirill Alekseyev from July of 2015 until November of 2015. They developed a tool in minimizing adverse patient safety events in an inpatient rehabilitation facility, and created a pre-admission checklist with a goal to prevent such events based on retrospective analysis.

From November of 2015 until May of 2016, he served as a Co-Principal Investigator at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, collaborating alongside Dr. Khaing S. Wei. They deduced the most common risk factors associated with cardiac arrest and strategies to improve survival rate of cardiac arrest patients in a community hospital in Brooklyn. They also participated extensively in analyzing the data of all in-hospital cardiac arrest events.

From July of 2019 until present day, Dr. Karatam has been serving on project implementation at Blake Medical Center. In collaboration with the PGY-3 class, aims were at meeting the institutional standard of achieving >90% code status documentation among patients admitted in the hospital over a 6-month intervention period. Different measures were utilized, including reminder emails, distribution of flyers on how to properly document code status, and scheduled resident-intern education on the importance of documenting code-status. Post-intervention results are expected in the coming future.

Throughout his line of work, Dr. Karatam has performed various presentations, including “An Interesting Case of Neuromyelitis Optica”, SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, New York (November 2015) & “Risk Factors and Strategies to Improve Survival of Cardiac Arrest Patients in a Community Hospital in Brooklyn, Washington D.C.” (May 2016).
