    Hi, The answer to the question is very complicated since sometimes decay would be more extensive than actually as it appears on X-rays. Is there a need sometimes to drill more than what we see in X-ray answer is yes. But usually dentist should be able to discuss this prior to treatment give you an idea how deep the decay would be and if it will be close to nerve.
