  • Injured toenail?

Assuming there is no injury to the soft tissue of your toe and you are able to safely do so, it would be okay to trim the nail as short as possible. Leaving a nail that is mostly detached on your toe increases the chance of developing an infection. That said, it is always best to have an injury like this evaluated by a podiatrist, as it is possible to have damage to soft tissues, infection, toe fracture, or need for the entire toenail to be removed; this should be diagnosed and/or performed only by a trained medical professional. Hope this helps! READ MORE

  • What kind of anesthesia do they use for ankle surgery?

Typically for surgical repair of ankle fracture, general anesthesia is required. The surgeon or anesthesiologist may also preform a peripheral or local nerve block to anesthetize the operative site. After the surgery some surgeons will discharge the patient home with an ON-Q pump to send continuous anesthetic to the surgical site for several days of post operative pain control. READ MORE

  • How to manage my foot pain?

There are many diagnoses that may cause your symptoms, some which are minor and some severe. Please make an appointment as soon as you can to have this evaluated by your local podiatrist. Best of luck! READ MORE

  • Do podiatrists treat ingrown toenails?

Podiatrists are highly trained in the treatment of all issues below the knee big and small. Ingrown toenails are some of the most common issues a podiatrist will treat. Depending on the severity of the ingrown toenail, a podiatrist may recommend treatment with a simple angled cut called a slant back, alleviating the pain and pressure caused by this ingrowing toenail if it is only mild. If this ingrown toenail is more severe or infected, a podiatrist may need to prescribe antibiotics and/or perform a simple in office surgery called a partial or full nail avulsion; first by numbing the toe with a local anesthetic and then removing the entire ingrowing portion of toenail. This procedure may be made permanent by using a chemical, typically phenol or sodium hydroxide, to destroy the cells which are responsible for growing the portion of ingrowing toenail so this issue does not return in the future. • Do podiatrists treat toenail fungus?

Yes we do, it’s one of the most common things we treat in my office. If you’re healthy enough, a podiatrist may recommend an oral antifungal medication which is the most effective treatment. Some podiatrist even offer cosmetic nail restoration procedures to hide your fungal nail while the new healthy nail regrows. READ MORE

  • How long does it take for foot fractures to heal?

The average foot fracture healing time is 6-8 weeks. Healing time may take longer or be complicated if a patient is too active on the fractured foot, is a smoker, or has certain health conditions such as diabetes. READ MORE
