Get to know Dermatopathologist Dr. Jeff D. Harvell, who serves patients in Falls Church, Virginia.

Dr. Harvell is a triple board-certified dermatopathologist at Inova Pathology Institute in Falls Church, Virginia.

In affiliation with Inova, he holds medical privileges at Inova Alexandria Hospital, Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Inova Loudoun Hospital, and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Harvell graduated with his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1991. He then went on to perform his residency in anatomic pathology at the University of California-San Francisco in 1995, his fellowship in dermatopathology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in 1996, and his residency in clinical pathology at the University of California, San Francisco in 1998.

With over three decades of experience, he is board-certified in dermatopathology & anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath). The mission of ABPath is to serve the public and advance the profession of pathology by setting certification standards and promoting lifelong competency of pathologists.

Dermatopathology is a joint subspecialty of dermatology and pathology or surgical pathology that focuses on the study of cutaneous diseases at a microscopic and molecular level. It also encompasses analyses of the potential causes of skin diseases at a basic level. Dermatopathologists are doctors who use microscopes to look at samples of skin, hair, and nails to diagnose diseases.
