Get to know Physiatrist and Hyperbaric Medicine Specialist Dr. Richard King Jr., who serves patients in Georgia.

Combining a career in medicine and an avid interest in scuba diving led Dr. King to pursue his dream of developing a major hyperbaric medicine facility in 1999. As Medical Director of HyOx Medical Treatment Center, he is responsible for evaluating patients for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, directing patient care and supervising medical staff at HyOx’s two Metro Atlanta locations.

An expert in hyperbaric medicine and one of several hundred physicians nationwide board-certified in undersea and hyperbaric medicine, Dr. King was first trained in hyperbaric medicine more than 40 years ago as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force and continues to research new treatment innovations in hyperbaric and rehabilitative medicine.

In addition to hyperbaric medicine, he has extensive experience in the rehabilitation of wounds, strokes, amputations, and head and spinal cord injuries.

HyOx Medical Treatment Center is an accredited comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility specializing in hyperbaric oxygen therapy and rehabilitation services. With two convenient locations in Marietta and Lawrenceville, Georgia, their mission is to provide the highest quality, patient-centered care through hyperbaric oxygen therapy, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, and other related outpatient programs and services. They seek to deliver optimal clinical outcomes for medically complex patients in a comfortable environment staffed by an expert interdisciplinary medical team actively and compassionately involved in each patient’s care.

A native of Miami, Florida, Dr. King has spent much of his career in Atlanta. He graduated with his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine and completed his specialty training at Emory’s Center for Rehabilitation Medicine in 1987, serving as chief resident in his final year.

Prior to opening HyOx Medical Treatment Center, he served as Medical Director at Cobb General Hospital (now WellStar Cobb Hospital) from 1987 to 1989, where he started their inpatient rehabilitation unit. From 1989 to 1998, he was the Medical Director at the Rehabilitation Institute of Sarasota in Sarasota, Florida.

An expert in his field, he is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR). The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This is accomplished through a process of certification and maintenance of certification that fosters excellence and encourages continuous learning.

Moreover, he is board-certified in undersea and hyperbaric medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine,  a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties that issues “certificates of special knowledge” in the specialty of preventive medicine.

A Certified Wound Specialist, Dr. King holds membership status with the American Medical Association, the Medical Association of Georgia, the Cobb County Medical Society, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Fellow – FAAPMR), the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, and the American Board of Wound Management.

As for his academic appointment, he serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry and physiatrics, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Physiatrists treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

Hyperbaric medicine is medical treatment in which an ambient pressure greater than sea level atmospheric pressure is a necessary component. Hyperbaric physicians are medical doctors who specialize in hyperbaric medicine. They use hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy to treat conditions such as decompression illness and carbon monoxide poisoning.

With stellar patient care and medical expertise, Dr. King has earned numerous accolades including Atlanta Magazine’s bi-annual designation as one of Atlanta’s “Top Docs” in a poll of medical peers conducted in 2005, 2007 and 2009. He was also rated among the “Top One Percent in the Nation” in his specialty in 2011 and 2012 by US News and World Report.

In addition, he is a frequent speaker at medical conferences spanning numerous medical specialty areas that regularly include hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunct in their treatment plan.

On a more personal note, he and his family live in Marietta, Georgia.
