Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. David Doherty Jr., who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.

Dr. Doherty Jr. is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with UT Physicians Orthopedics in Texas, seeing patients at the Memorial Hermann Orthopedic and Spine Hospital in Bellaire, and the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute in Sugar Land.

Specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery, he performs partial and total joint arthroplasty, and his clinical focus includes both primary and revision hip and knee replacement. He optimizes the patient outcome and experience with a customized treatment plan utilizing anterior and posterior approaches to the hip, muscle-sparing approaches to the knee, and the most advanced technology, including robotic joint replacement surgery.

The doctor joined UT Physicians Orthopedics after completing a fellowship in adult reconstruction at Duke University School of Medicine in North Carolina. He graduated with his medical degree from the University of Texas McGovern Medical School where he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society. He then completed a residency in orthopedic surgery with the University of Texas at Houston in the Texas Medical Center. During residency, he was selected to represent the program at the American Orthopedic Association Emerging Leaders Program and served as Administrative Chief Resident.

As a testament of his continued education, he is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Professionally, Dr. Doherty Jr. is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

An enthusiastic researcher, he has been actively participating in and publishing research since he was a premedical student in college. His research has been published in scientific textbooks, national peer-reviewed journals, and has been presented at national meetings.

Spending considerable time traveling on medical outreach trips to developing nations, Dr. Doherty Jr. most recently spent time performing surgery in Baghdad, Iraq and San Salvador, El Salvador. Additionally, he spent elective time during residency traveling to Sydney, Australia to complete a mini-fellowship observing the techniques of osseointegration surgery.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

A 4th generation Houstonian, Dr. Doherty Jr. loves spending time at the many parks, museums, and restaurants with his wife, Amy, and their 3 children.
