  • Can iodine contrast cause thyroid problems?

    Most studies show contrast medium injection does not affect thyroid function in patients with a normal thyroid. Patients who may be at risk of developing thyrotoxicosis after contrast medium injection are Graves' disease and patients with multinodular goiter with thyroid autonomy.   • Can you get CT scan results immediately?

    In cases that require a STAT reading request from your doctor in most cases can receive test results nearly immediately. The Radiologists will review and interpret your CT scan as soon as it’s completed, within 24 hours. Most average results are sent 2- 3 days along with a cd of the images. Delays are having to request priors for comparison. If a life-threatening or abnormal diagnosis requires immediate attention the Radiologist will contact your doctor. READ MORE

  • Is contrast dye bad for the thyroid?

    Studies have shown a low percentage of people have long-lasting low thyroid levels after iodine exposure from IV contrast dye for CT scan. Some studies demonstrated some people whose thyroid glands become temporarily & in rare cases permanently hyperactive after exposure to iodine. But in general, the exact risk of thyroid problems after intravenous contrast dye is unknown. READ MORE

  • How long is a CT scan of the brain?

    CT scans are quicker than MRI scans, usually lasting about 10 minutes. They will have you lay on a bed that’s slowly moved into a CT scanner head first the scanner will rotate around your head. Prep time if contrast is added and paperwork will be longer than the actual scan. READ MORE

  • How long is radiation treatment for stomach cancer?

    Your Oncologist can provide specific details about your specific situation and care plan. Also, consult the Radiation facility for detailed information about your treatment plan and what to expect during your therapy. For stomach cancer, radiation is commonly used to control symptoms. Usually externally as a short course from a day to 2 weeks depending on your specific situation. Radiation will be given over a longer period over 5 weeks when there are concerns about cancer cells being left behind after surgery. This is not my area of care, your Oncologist and treatment facility will provide many answers have a list of questions ready for your visit. READ MORE

  • How long does a liver CT scan take?

    CT scan of the liver with contrast takes about 40 minutes. This includes 20 minutes for the test and 20 minutes for preparation. A contrast material is given as oral and IV. The use of contrast can help the radiologist distinguish normal from abnormal conditions. Let the Technologist know about existing medical conditions such as kidney problems and about the medications being taken. READ MORE

  • What do you wear for a sinus CT scan?

    Avoid nasal wash at least 24 hours before a sinus CT scan. Remove any items from the head and neck area such as piercings, glasses, hearing aids, jewelry, hair items, removable metal from the month, etc. When ordered with IV contrast inform the Technologist if you are diabetic and on Glucophage, Metformin, or Glucovance or allergic to iodine. For IV contrast it is best to not eat or drink anything 4 hours prior to your scan. READ MORE

  • How long will a prostate CT scan take?

    Most all Radiology Centers have the same procedures for exams. I recommend you contact the imaging facility for detailed instructions before your appointment. Below are basic patient instructions: 1. Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time. 2. Nothing to eat or drink anything for 4 hours before your scan appointment. If the facility requires oral preparation to prepare for your scan, they provide or order the solution and instructions. 3. Continue taking medications as usual. Consult your doctor or imaging facility if you have questions. 4. Change into a gown because snaps and zippers can interfere with the scan. 5. Leave valuables such as jewelry or credit cards and other valuables at home. 6. Allow 1 hour for your scan most scans take from 15 to 60 minutes. 7. After the test is complete the facility Radiologist will review the results. READ MORE

    Interventional radiology is a sub-specialty of radiology utilizing minimally-invasive image-guided procedures. Interventional radiology is used to aid diagnosis and treat patients using the least invasive technique to minimize risk to the patient and improve health outcomes. In comparison to open surgery procedures have the least risk, pain, and recovery time Vascular surgery is indicated when the vascular disease cannot be treated by less invasive or non-surgical treatments. The purpose of vascular surgery is to treat vascular diseases of the arteries and veins. Vascular surgery involves techniques relating to endovascular surgeries such as balloon angioplasty, stenting, aortic and peripheral vascular endovascular stent or graft placement, thrombolysis, and other adjuncts for vascular reconstruction.     Ultrasound is the standard of care for diagnosing venous problems. If the Provider is concerned with possible pathology in the pelvis or abdomen as an underlying cause for venous issues, they may order a CT venogram. It may be able to help determine the anatomy and level of pathology. CT scans can be ordered for persistent concerns along with Ultrasound to find deep, hidden varicose veins and even the root disorder in lower body circulation behind the symptoms in patients with varicose veins.   • Are you awake during radiation therapy?

    Radiation therapy is noninvasive, usually anesthesia is not required. Most require lying down on a table with the required immobilization devices holding the body in the given position. The radiation device moves in various directions around the affected area to pass the radio waves. This is not my field area, but speak with your Oncologist for any available sedatives if you are claustrophobic.
