Dr. Juanita Villamil-Silvey is a Dentist and tenured Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A competent dentist, Dr. Villamil-Silvey actually serves as a tenured Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, School of Dental Medicine. At the beginning of her professional career in Dentistry she worked several years as a dentist in private practice while simultaneously providing clinical dental teaching to dental students. After a few years she decided to focus her professional efforts on academics and dental clinical teaching to dental students at the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine.
Graduating from Academia San Jose High School with high honors, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras Campus, and her Doctor in Dental Medicine degree from the University of Puerto Rico School, Medical Sciences Campus, School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Villamil-Silvey later pursued a year long Fellowship in Leadership from the American Dental Educators Association (ADEA).
As a distinguished graduate of the DMD program she was immediately recruited as a faculty member at the UPR. With a keen interest in administration she pursued several years of supplemental coursework at the UPR Business Administration PhD Program, while simultaneously fulfilling her duties as full time faculty at the DMD program.
During Dr. During Villamil-Silvey’s career she not only taught clinical dentistry, she also occupied several important academic administrative positions. Her service as an academic administrator went beyond dental education into higher education at health sciences campus, and university system-wide level.. She served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Medical Sciences Campus (overseeing the main six health related formal educational programs at the island of PR, including Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing and several others up to master or doctorate degrees). Later, she also served as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Puerto Rico’s Central Administration, which included, the eleven campuses, island wide system.
Dr. Villamil-Silvey is highly experienced with accreditation processes of dental programs as well as with higher education institutional accreditation processes. She has been appointed and collaborated as site visitor at the dental doctoral level for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), and, site visitor for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) at the higher education academic level.
Also, Dr. Villamil-Silvey has received several honors and recognitions. To name a few, she received the Oral Medicine Award at the UPR SDM, Recognizing for her dedication and achievements as the UPR Associate Vice President. She has been invested as Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the International College of Dentists United States Section.
Dr. Villamil-Silvey has published articles regarding different aspects of dental education and patient treatment at dental institutions, and has participated in UPR Central Administration grants.
Dentistry, also known as Dental and Oral Medicine, is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity.
