Back in the early days of his academic career, he attended the Central Ohio School of Massage before earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition from Park University in Kansas City where he graduated with honors. He then went on to graduate with his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the Cleveland Chiropractic College.

Remaining up to date in his field, Dr. Merritt is an active member of the Central Ohio Diabetes Association. He is a lecturer and presenter on various health related topics.

In his professional experience, he has served as an instructor in anatomy and physiology, and has worked with the New Albany Country Club, and the Sawmill Athletic Club. He was also a therapist with the 1992 Olympic trials and the Columbus Marathon for several years, where he worked with professional and amateur athletes.
