Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Mashkur Husain, who serves patients in Southgate, Michigan.

A highly trained cardiologist, Dr. Husain treats patients at Downriver Heart and Vascular Specialists in the Downriver Area of Southgate, Michigan. He chose his career in medicine because he saw first-hand the difference a physician can make in people’s lives. As a child, he watched his father practice medicine and knew he wanted to follow in his footsteps.

He wants his patients to be comfortable and free to ask any questions about their healthcare. “I am a great listener. I enjoy being a cardiologist and want to make my patients comfortable, and I believe that shared decision making is the best way to achieve a satisfactory outcome” expressed the doctor.

Graduating with his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, he completed his residency in internal medicine at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Later, he completed two consecutive fellowships in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at the Ascension St. John Hospital and Medical Center.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), the doctor attained board certification in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology through the American Board of Internal Medicine. The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Currently, Dr. Husain is associated with multiple Beaumont and Henry Ford Hospitals. In addition to practicing, he is interested in research, publishing in various medical journals, and presenting at conferences.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).

During his free time, Dr. Husain enjoys playing and watching sports and spending time with his family. His favorite sports are football and cricket. He also enjoys traveling, and his favorite place to visit is New York City. He is most proud of his brother, who, despite having Cerebral Palsy, has overcome all odds, finished his education, and currently works as a teacher.
