Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Gregory G. Markarian, who serves patients in Chicago, Illinois.
An experienced orthopedic surgeon with over 20 years of experience in the field, Dr. Markarian tends to patients at his private practice, Chicago Sports Medicine Institute. He has established himself as a leading expert in the field of orthopedics, particularly in the treatment of shoulder, knee, and sports-related injuries.
Before embarking on his professional journey, he earned his medical degree and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1992 and 1996, respectively. Wanting to further his education, he completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Miami in 1997.
Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.
Throughout his career, Dr. Markarian has made significant contributions to the medical field, particularly in the area of minimally invasive procedures. One area where he has demonstrated his expertise is in Single Portal Arthroscopy (SPA), an innovative technique that aims to revolutionize traditional arthroscopy. Unlike the conventional approach that requires multiple incisions, SPA enables him to perform surgeries with just a single incision, significantly reducing scarring, pain, and recovery time for his patients.
Committed to excellence beyond his surgical practice, he has served as a Team Physician for numerous professional and amateur sports teams, lending his expertise to renowned organizations such as the Miami Dolphins, the Florida Marlins, and the United States Women’s Professional Volleyball League. Additionally, he has provided medical support to educational institutions like The University of Miami, Dade County Public Schools, and sports teams like the Chicago Enforcers and Naperville Youth Football.
Dr Markarian uses the expertise he learned from treating professional atheletes to get them back on the field with minimally invasive advanced arthroscopic techniques on his patients in his Chicago practice. Whether they are injured weekend warriors or workers comp patients or victims of motor of vehicle accidents, the goal is the same: return to pre injury level of function with minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Markarian treats a lot of shoulder injuries and the use of arthroscopy in shoulder injuries is a game changer. If patients have rotator cuff, tears or problems with the labrum and instability, these techniques have proven beneficial for Dr. Markarian‘s patients over the last two decades. He has been a leader in the field, and has developed new technologies and patents in the treatment of rotator cuff disease, He has also presented on the international stage amongst his peers and leaders in the field. for this reason, if a patient has a shoulder problem or a problem with their knee, Dr. Markarian is the obvious choice in the Chicagoland area.
He also takes a comprehensive approach to problem solving and looks at the whole picture. If conservative management is appropriate, that will be his first choice and sometimes injections and certain types of therapy may be the best route. Also, he is a proponent of trying new weight loss techniques for knee problems and back problems in patients that are obese and not candidates for surgery because of their elevated body mass index.
Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
