Get to know Internist Dr. Gustavo Avila Amat, who serves patients in Atlantis, Florida.

A board-certified internist, Dr. Amat is affiliated with HCA Florida JFK Hospital in Atlantis, Florida.

HCA Florida JFK Hospital is a 486-bed medical center with over 500 affiliated physicians, 2200 healthcare professionals, and 300 volunteers. The hospital specializes in cardiovascular care, and is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Miami’s Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.

A native of Tegucigalpa, Dr. Amat graduated with his medical degree from the Catholic University of Honduras, UNICAH, in 2015. In the period from 2016 to 2017, he dedicated himself to preparing for the STEPS, which implied constant trips to the United States, with prolonged stays in different cities to take courses that enabled him to obtain above-average scores on these exams.

During that preparatory time, he carried out medical rotations in hospitals located in Houston (MD Anderson), Philadelphia (Drexel University), Omaha (University of Nebraska), and Miami (Jackson Memorial Hospital).

Upon passing the STEPS with outstanding scores, Dr. Amat became an intern at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine of the University of Miami, beginning his studies in July of 2018 and serving as chief resident during the 2021-2022 academic period.

Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.

On a more personal note, Dr. Amat is the son of Sonia Amat Basantes, an Ecuadorian engineer and Master in Educational Mathematics, who works as a teacher at the American School of Tegucigalpa & Gustavo Adolfo Ávila Montes, a health doctor, who also completed his specialization studies in the United States at Johns Hopkins University.
