Dr. Smith is a board-eligible orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstruction & joint replacement surgery of the hips and knees. He practices at Florida Orthopaedic Institute, operating out of the offices in North Tampa, Riverview, and Wesley Chapel.
“What I like best about my job is seeing my patients come in and having a decreased quality of life, decreased functional status, and then being able to develop a plan individualized to them and returning them back to doing the things that they enjoy. So what sets Florida Orthopaedic Institute apart is that there are so many fellowship trained orthopedic surgeons working under one roof to provide the best possible care” expressed the doctor.
Caring for most lower extremity conditions, Dr. Smith has a special interest in hip and knee replacement surgery. He also takes care of patients with failed or infected joint replacements. He was inspired to pursue a career in orthopedics, focusing on joint replacements after seeing the dramatic improvement in patients’ quality of life from both conservative and surgical treatments.
“I take pride in working with my patients to provide a treatment plan tailored specifically to their needs and get them back to an active lifestyle and doing the things that they enjoy” he stated.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Smith completed his undergraduate degree at Salisbury University in Maryland, where he played lacrosse, winning two NCAA national championships. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Thereafter, he continued at Philadelphia College of Medicine, completing his residency in orthopedic surgery, where he was chief resident and honored with the Academic Excellence Award. He completed his fellowship training in adult reconstruction at Florida Orthopaedic Institute.
Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Smith is a member of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.
Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
A firm believer in a patient-centered approach to orthopedic care, Dr. Smith believes in listening to each patient’s unique needs and goals to formulate an individualistic treatment plan for them. He has published several articles for various peer reviewed journals, and has received awards for his research from both the AOAO and the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE).
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
