His collaborative approach has seen him work in tandem with nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, adoption agencies, attorneys, and judges, addressing complex issues ranging from incarceration and homelessness to trauma and developmental disorders such as IDD and autism.
In regards to his educational background, Dr. Gonzalez holds a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialty in Behavioral/Organizational Psychology and a postgraduate re-specialization in Applied Behavior Analysis from the University of North Texas. Additionally, he is a state-licensed doctoral level behavior analyst in Texas and holds a national board certification in applied behavior analysis.
His illustrious career began in the early 1990s when he first delved into developing and implementing behavioral interventions. He has held significant academic positions, including Faculty Chair for Social Sciences and Department of Psychology at the University of Phoenix and adjunct faculty roles at Kaplan University and Arizona State University. Currently, he serves as adjunct faculty for the University of Texas San Antonio and is a faculty member for Ouachita Baptist University’s Applied Behavior Analysis department.
In recognition of his commitment to trauma-informed care, Dr. Gonzalez has earned a professional certification from Florida State University in Trauma and Resilience, along with the Certified Clinical Trauma Professional designation from the International Association of Trauma Professionals. His vast knowledge extends to Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
One of his pioneering achievements lies in his program that trains hospital medical professionals, including MDs, RNs, intake specialists, and administrators, in de-escalation techniques during crises. He recognizes the importance of reducing workplace stress for direct care personnel, an endeavor that directly aligns with the objectives of the AACOG IDD Transition Team.
In 2016, Dr. Gonzalez led the development of the 72-hour crisis intervention program for the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG), serving individuals with developmental disabilities in Bexar County and surrounding areas.
Beyond the confines of his immediate surroundings, he has successfully employed Behavior Skills Training (BST) through pyramidal methods to instruct case managers, medical staff, direct care personnel, and family members, ensuring that his knowledge and expertise reach far and wide.
Moreover, Dr. Gonzalez holds a certificate from the San Antonio College Law Enforcement Academy as a Police Academy Instructor and a Police Academy Instructor Certification from the Texas Commission Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. His expertise in crisis intervention has been instrumental in training the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies on effectively dealing with individuals with Autism and Developmental Disabilities during crisis situations.
