Get to know Pharmacist Joshua Shumway, who serves patients in Colorado.

Joshua is a pharmacist-in-charge with Axis Health System Cortez Integrated Healthcare & Axis Health System Dove Creek Integrated Healthcare in Colorado.

His duties and responsibilities include managing and overseeing the 340B program and conducting the monthly 340B audit for HRSA compliance. He has helped design and implement 3 pharmacies with Axis Health System. As the pharmacist he collaborates with clinic providers to provide best patient care possible. Joshua is currently sitting on Axis Health System’s incidence, grievance, and risk counsel to help improve patient safety. He has established DORA state compliance with all clinics within his health system. Oversees hiring and supervising of all pharmacy staff throughout the clinics and serves as a consultant pharmacist for all sister clinics. He also opened the first tele-pharmacy in the state of Colorado and participated in establishing 3rd party insurance contracts for the pharmacies. Was in charge of testing and updating pharmacy software for all clinic pharmacies so they could provide better care for their patients. Also established licensed med rooms for dispensing providers to patients medications. He is listed as Person in Charge for HRSA/OPA compliance and oversight at the clinics. 

Among his teaching activities, Joshua has been serving as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy at Northeast Ohio Medical University since October of 2018 until June of 2022. He led students in topic discussions, evaluated clinical performance, and lectures on pharmacy management.

Likewise, he was a pharmacist preceptor at the said establishment, instructing and guiding pharmacy students in developing and maintaining clinical services standards. He also assesses students’ skills and provides evaluations based on performance. 

In regards to his educational background, Joshua graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Utah Valley University College of Science in 2010. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the College of Pharmacy at Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2016.

Throughout his clinical and academic line of work, he has served as the pharmacy manager at Rite Aid Stores and CVSHealth. While pharmacy manager at CVS he oversaw the largest CVS Health Hub in the country. He participated in leadership training and development with both companies. Also held many leadership roles such as Regional MTM Captain, Regional Pharmacist Trainer, Regional Pharmacy Technician Interviewer, and so much more. 

Licensed by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy and Colorado State Board of Pharmacy, Joshua holds a Rite Aid Leadership Essentials Certificate, a Medication Therapy Management Services Certificate, and a Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Certificate, among others. 

Among his research experience, he worked alongside research advisor, Michelle Cudnik, PharmD, BCACP, to conduct the study “Impact of Treatment Regimens on Depression Symptoms and Glycemic Control (January 2015 – May 2015). The study focused on glycemic control and the effect it has on a patient’s depression symptoms.

In 2021, Joshua received the Outstanding Alumni Award from Northeast Ohio Medical University for his outstanding contributions to the community, the pharmacy profession, and the College of Pharmacy.
