An exceptional pathologist, Dr. Tomaszewski is affiliated with UBMD Physicians’ Group, serving patients in Buffalo, New York. He also serves as the SUNY Distinguished Professor and Peter A. Nickerson, PhD Professor and Chair of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences within the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.
His personal specialty focus areas are in renal pathology, immunopathology, and urological pathology. He provides tissue biopsy and clinical laboratory diagnoses, prognoses, and therapeutic advice to patients and clinicians on medical and surgical diseases of the kidney (including kidney transplants), bladder, prostate, and testis.
UBMD Physicians’ Group is the single largest medical group in Western New York. With more than 500 respected doctors in 18 medical specialties, they offer a full range of primary and specialty care for children, adults and seniors. In addition to practicing medicine, their doctors teach medical students and residents at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.
Raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Tomaszewski received his undergraduate education from LaSalle College in 1973. He attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1977. After finishing medical school, he completed an internship and residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. During that training he had special concentrations in immunology, HLA testing, and nephropathology.
Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in surgical pathology in 1983, before joining the faculty in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In his first year of appointment, he was given the opportunity to do a specially arranged fellowship in nephropathology with Dr. Conrad Pirani at Columbia University.
Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in anatomic & clinical pathology through the American Board of Pathology (ABPath). The mission of the ABPath is to promote the health of the public and advance the practice and science of pathology by establishing voluntary certification standards and assessing the qualifications of those seeking to practice the specialty of pathology.
Over the years, Dr. Tomaszewski has had the great good fortune to teach many classes of undergraduate medical students in nephropathology and genitourinary pathology. He has been the Program Director of the Surgical Pathology and Immunopathology Fellowships at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and instructed 56 Fellows.
Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and in some cases, the whole body. Pathologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and management of diseases by laboratory methods.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Tomaszewski has been the recipient of various honors and accolades, including the America’s Top Doctor Award by Castle Connolly Magazine, America’s Top Doctor for Cancer Award by Castle Connolly Magazine, Top Doctor Award by Philadelphia Magazine, David B.P.
