Can alcoholism be cured?
Although I am an LPC, not a doctor, I work with addiction every day. Like all addictions, alcoholism cannot be cured, only managed. Some people may feel as if they are cured after several years of sobriety, but those people still possess the predilection to be addicted to *something*, whether it is alcohol, cigarettes, weed, other drugs, a behavior, or food. If your friend drinks heavily every day and decides to give up his/her addiction, it is very likely he/she will need medical intervention. Alcohol is one of the few drugs that can cause withdrawal symptoms so intense that they can cause death if medical intervention is not sought. Hope this helps! Can psychotherapy fix my anxiety?
Hi! Psychotherapy, otherwise known as counseling, can give you the tools to cope with anxiety. It can also help you work out the reasons for your anxiety, thus reducing or eliminating the anxiety altogether. Sometimes medication in conjunction with therapy is helpful. How long is therapy for ADD?
Hello, Because there are varying degrees of ADD, and some people are on medication that is effective for them, while others do not take medication, and some people are more receptive to therapy/ counseling than others, there is no way to put a time frame on the course of treatment for ADD. How effective is marriage counseling?
Hi, Marriage counseling does work, if both of you are committed to making it work. The reason marriage counseling often fails is because one partner already has one foot out of the door. If this is the case, it is difficult for counseling to work. In any endeavor, if one partner is working harder than the other, the results are likely to show it. How Can I Finally Overcome my Pain Medication Addiction?
Hi, There is always help! It may take an in-patient stay to detox from the medication, then an IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) that usually meets three times a week for three hours each day/evening to give you tools to stay sober. NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meetings are also valuable tools in maintaining sobriety. You also need to find out why you are having headaches in the first place. There may be something going on that needs to be addressed by something other than pain medication. There are many medications that can help prevent or control headaches that are not addictive and are not pain relievers. Please see your PCP or a neurologist as soon as you are able. READ MORE

My daughter's friend is abused by her parents. What should I do?
Hi, There are several things you can do. Encourage your daughter's friend to talk to the school counselor and tell the counselor what is going on at home. Counselors are mandated reporters, meaning they are legally bound to report all allegations of abuse to the the police or CPS, or both. You can also encourage your daughter's friend to talk to a trusted teacher. Teachers are also mandated reporters. The other option is for you to make a report online to CPS.
