What do you attribute your success to?
- I don't come from a family of doctors; I come from a broken home. I've been homeless. Being mixed race, I lived in a village in Russia (my mother's home) as the only "black" person at the time. I grew up with a stepmother that was discriminatory. I got married at the age of 21 and found myself in an abusive relationship with a child on the way. My husband threatened my life by holding a gun to my head when I tried to leave him and threatened the life of our son as well. I found the courage to leave and escape from Cameroon to the United States because of something I heard Oprah say; she said that we shouldn't stay in an abusive relationship for the sake of the children because they grow up seeing that and believing it is normal and okay. That made a huge impact on me, so I found a way out.I came to the United States in 2004 as an au pair. After a year of working for that family, I became a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and I cleaned houses. I got my LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse), did my prerequisites for medical school, and eventually put myself through medical school.I am remarried now to a wonderful man and have another son. My ex-husband kept my son from me for 12 years despite hiring a lawyer and going to court, but he came to live with us when he was 16 and is still with me.Because of all I went through as a child, I felt I always needed to work harder than everyone else to achieve success. I became a bookworm, always studying, which is still a part of my life today--always learning. I love to instill that knowledge in my patients to help them understand their disease better or how they can make lifestyle changes that will help them live healthier, pain-free lives.Because of all I endured as a young adult, I want to empower and encourage other women. I want to help them find the courage they need to leave an abusive situation. So I have become an advocate for childhood trauma and domestic violence. I partner with the Evelyn Lozada Foundation for survivors of domestic violence to provide shelter when they leave abusive relationships. I am also a member of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. And I'm a member of the National Network to End Domestic Violence. Those hard moments in life have made me better.
