A board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Xiao is an attending physician with Mercy Hospital Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates in Buffalo, New York. A native of China, Dr. Xiao graduated from the Peking University Health Science Center, where he received both his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and medical degrees. He completed his integrated residency in cardiac surgery at Peking University First Hospital, where he later served as an assistant professor and attending cardiac surgeon. 

Subsequently, he was awarded a research fellowship from Emory University and Harvard Medical School for basic science studies of aortic aneurysm formation mechanism, and then completed his clinical training with a residency in general surgery at SUNY Buffalo and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

With an unwavering commitment to his specialty, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs.

An authority in his field, Dr. Xiao has received many clinical and research awards during residency and fellowship training, including the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. During his fellowship in 2017, he was the finalist in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Jeopardy competition for North America.
