  • Why do my gums bleed often?

Sometimes bleeding gums can be a result of a more serious systemic condition such as diabetes or a blood disorder. Sometimes related to medications you are taking like a blood thinner. Most often it is due to a lack of good oral cleaning --thorough brushing and especially flossing. I would start with a dental exam and professional tooth cleaning and go from there. READ MORE

  • Are whitening toothpastes safe for enamel?

Generally speaking, Yes, whitening toothpastes are safe for the enamel. I would look for one that has the ADA seal of approvalbecause they have been tested to be sure they are not too abrasive and won't wear away your enamel.  My recent search showsthat 65 brands have the ADA seal. Keep in mind that they have been tested for safety, not whitening ability.  All toothpastes canmake the claim to be whitening because this is a cosmetic claim and does not have to have evidence to support any whitening effect.Simply brushing with water can remove stains from the teeth and make them whiter.   READ MORE

  • How long does a dental bridge last?

Generally speaking, an anterior bridge lasts longer than a posterior because the biting forces on it are less strong. But the biggest determinant is how strong the supporting teeth are that support the bridge. If the support teeth do not have a lot of filling material and have not had root canal treatment, they are stronger and will last longer. On strong supporting teeth and a bridge that is only replacing one missing tooth, I would expect a lifespan of about ten years. READ MORE

  • Can teeth grinding cause headaches?

It's very possible the headaches are related to teeth grinding. Many headaches are from muscle tension and that is increased with clenching and grinding of the teeth. Tooth grinding is often present in patients with sleep apnea. Have your dentist or physician evaluate both possibilities. READ MORE

  • How many visits does a root canal take?

One or two visits is typical for a root canal. If you're seeing a specialist, you will need to return to your regular dentist for a filling or crown afterward, however. Usually, your dentist will let you know how many visits it will need once he's done the examination. READ MORE

  • Can a dry socket heal on its own?

Yes, a dry socket will heal on its own. It is an inflammation of the tooth socket following an extraction, usually caused because a stable blood clot does not form to cover the hole. This allows saliva and bacteria to inflame the bone. It is quite painful but will heal naturally once enough new bone and gum tissue grow to cover the exposure. READ MORE

  • How do you heal tooth nerve damage naturally?

Generally, nerve damage to a tooth is classified as reversible pulpitis or irreversible pulpitis. When the damage is reversible, avoiding further trauma to the tooth and using an anti-inflammatory medication can help the nerve heal. When the nerve is irreversibly damaged, it usually dies and can become infected which can lead to a tooth abscess. If that happens, an antibiotic is best to treat it and not a natural remedy. Dr. AL READ MORE

  • Will I experience pain after a tooth extraction?

Most patients experience some degree of pain after a tooth extraction. It can vary depending on the amount of work needed to extract the tooth. Your dentist can let you know what to expect and how to deal with any pain after the procedure. READ MORE

  • Is drinking apple cider vinegar bad for your teeth?

I know of several patients that use cider vinegar for its health benefits. As long as it's only once or twice a day in small amounts it's not going to damage the teeth. Of course it is acidic. Certainly don't hold it in your mouth very long and a good idea would be to follow it with a drink of water or swish and spit with water to better protect you teeth. READ MORE

  • How should I prepare for my root canal?

No special preparation is necessary, unless your dentist has directed you to follow certain precautions. Sometimes you may be instructed to take an antibiotic prior to the root canal or to avoid chewing on the tooth to be treated. If you haven't been told anything by your dentist, no worries. READ MORE

  • Would I need to take opioids after my extraction?

Several studies have shown that using ibuprofen and Tylenol after wisdom tooth extraction are as effective or more effective than using opioids for pain relief.  Talk to your oral surgeon about the dosage and timing on their use. Dr. AL READ MORE

  • What does it mean when my gums are sore?

Most instances of gum soreness are caused by gingivitis--inflammation of the gum tissues.  The most common cause is bacteria in the plaque film that attaches itself to the base of the tooth. Even if your gums look fine, you may still have gingivitis.  The best remedy is thorough cleaning at the base of the teeth and between the teeth.  This means brushing plus proper flossing.  An antibacterial mouthrinse like Listerine can help also. See your dentist if the problem doesn't clear up within a week. Dr. AL READ MORE

  • Does an impacted tooth require surgery?

Often times, yes. Impacted teeth are usually wisdom teeth that do not have enough space to erupt properly in correct position at the back of the mouth. They can cause pain and infection when there is not enough room for them so extraction is recommended. This usually requires some amount of dental surgery. Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted however and you should consult your dentist or oral surgeon for advice.   Dr. AL READ MORE

  • Can my silver fillings be replaced with white fillings?

Yes, but ask your dentist about the risks and benefits of doing that. Smaller fillings can more easily be replaced but some larger ones can cause complications when being removed. READ MORE

  • Will being on a liquid diet affect my teeth in any way?

Provided that the liquids are not too acidic or high in sugar, I see no harmful effects for your teeth if you're on a liquid diet and you continue to practice good oral hygiene.    Dr. Al READ MORE

  • Can you be prone to getting cavities?

If diet is not a factor, I would first be sure that good oral hygiene is practiced. Brush twice daily, especially before bed, and use dental floss once daily. Yes, some people are prone to cavities. Genetics play a part in the resistance of teeth to decay, and family history influences the bacterial population in the mouth that can produce more cavities.
