Get to know Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Allison N. Schroeder, who serves patients throughout the State of Ohio.

Dr. Schroeder is a distinguished specialist in non-surgical sports medicine, renowned for her expertise in diagnostic and interventional sports ultrasound. She is an attending physician at University Hospitals and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at Case Western Reserve University. She has built a career marked by academic excellence, clinical proficiency, and a commitment to advancing sports medicine.

Passionate about patient care and education, she is devoted to returning patients to an active lifestyle. She is actively involved in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and is committed to exploring ways to optimize clinical care and education through research. As a runner herself, she brings a unique perspective to the care of female athletes and runners, combining personal experience with professional expertise. Her commitment to excellence and comprehensive care is evident in her practice, where she integrates diagnostic ultrasound, orthobiologic injections, and advanced ultrasound-guided procedures to provide the best possible outcomes for her patients.

Academically, Dr. Schroeder attended the University of Notre Dame, where she graduated magna cum laude with a major in Biological Science and a minor in Science, Technology, and Values. During her undergraduate years, she showcased her athletic prowess as a competitor on the varsity track and field team for the Fighting Irish.

Continuing her academic pursuit, she earned her medical degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where she served as chief resident. Her passion for sports medicine led her to a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic Square. During this time, she played a pivotal role in the care of renowned teams like the Minnesota Lynx, Minnesota Twins, and North Central University Athletes, honing her skills in the comprehensive care of athletes and diagnostic and interventional sports ultrasound. She has traveled nationally and internationally caring for Team USA Para Track and Field and Team USA 3×3 basketball. 

Board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with a Certificate of Added Qualification in sports medicine, Dr. Schroeder is committed to ongoing professional development. She completed the International Olympic Committee Diploma in Sports Medicine Program. In recognition of her outstanding academic achievements, she was honored with the Association of Academic Physiatrists prestigious McLean Outstanding Resident/Fellow Award in 2021 and the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’s Outstanding Reviewer Award in 2022.

On a professional level, she is an active member of various national organizations, including the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Her involvement extends to serving on committees within these organizations, where she contributes her insights and expertise.

Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise at all levels of participation and competition. A non-surgical sports medicine doctor is specially trained in the medical care of athletes and to diagnose and treat injuries that are sustained while playing sports and any other type of orthopedic (musculoskeletal) injury.
